Tips & Tricks: Assembly Panelization

Reading time ( words)

Thoughtful PCB array and panel design can reduce line stoppage, improve changeover time and reduce material scrap. For the purpose of this discussion, a panel is an array of PCBs which may or may not include scrap material.

Fiducial location and design are good aids to prevent mistakes, but may still result in line stoppage. In this figure, the round features with square mask perimeter are fiducials. The square feature with round mask is a PCB bad mark.

If you have fiducial recognition issues, making the shape of the mask opening different than the fiducial feature may help the vision system discern the target feature easier. Locating the bad mark at the PCB center consistently helps the line operator identify the bad mark without supporting drawings and reduces camera movement. Locating fiducials off center of the PCB will help prevent a print and/or place error but it will still stop the line upon the error.

Real Time with… SMTAI 2020: Technical Conference Review

10/06/2020 | Real Time with...SMTAI
SMTAI 2020, which was converted to a virtual event, took place from September 28–30. I attend every year, but since there was no keynote in the virtual format, I went straight to the technical conference. This event covered a broad range of topics related to everything in assembly. Over 90 technical presentations are available, but this report covers just some of the sessions I attended.

High-reliability, Low-temperature Solder Alloys

05/18/2020 | Dr. Pritha Choudhury, MacDermid Alpha Electronics Solutions
Increased digitalization and greater connectivity have been driving miniaturization and more complex and integrated designs in electronics. As the real estate on PCBs shrinks, so does the size of packages. However, the drive for finding design solutions for increased performance has continued to expand. The solder joint is an essential part of assemblies for electronic devices as it provides electrical, thermal, and mechanical connections. Therefore, soldering materials have been evolving to enable such a technological revolution.

Via Reliability and Robustness in Today’s Environment

04/15/2020 | Happy Holden, I-Connect007
When Bob Neves dropped by the I-Connect007 booth at IPC APEX EXPO 2020 this year, Happy Holden took the opportunity to record the conversation. Bob had some startling and exciting updates on the testing of microvias and through-hole technology.
