REDCOM Wins Business of the Month Award from NY State Sen. Rich Funke

REDCOM Laboratories Inc. is being profiled as New York State Senator Rich Funke's Business of the Month.

REDCOM is a true small business success story. The company was founded in Penfield, New York by Klaus and Brigitte Gueldenpfenning in 1978. Forty years later, REDCOM counts among its customers all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, numerous government agencies, independent telecom service providers, and many international customers.

In addition to developing communications technology, REDCOM is also in the business of electronics manufacturing. REDCOM EMS, established in 2012 as a business unit of REDCOM Laboratories Inc., provides contract manufacturing services to OEMs by leveraging the company's vast manufacturing resources and skilled employee base. REDCOM EMS specializes in PCB assembly, cable assemblies, and complete product build. The role of electronic manufacturing services (EMS) companies is very often misunderstood. Some perspectives, however, are helpful to frame the question of what is on their minds, especially in the current global environment. EMS companies build products but they are not really “product” companies. While they may provide design services, the designs are still owned by their customers. As a result, they do not have the right to select or change components. In most cases, the EMS company will still be responsible for purchasing these components which are typically 70–90% of their cost to produce the end products. They also do not determine what volumes should be built.
