MSI Reportedly Considering Sale of OEM Motherboard Business to Flextronics
May 28, 2008 | I-Connect007Estimated reading time: Less than a minute
According to an article in DigiTimes, Micro-Star International (MSI) is reportedly considering the sale of its motherboard manufacturing business to Flextronics International, the Singapore-based EMS provider, while holding on to its brand motherboard business. Both companies are allegedly negotiating a sales price currently and sources speculate that any announcement concerning the purchase would be made in the third quarter of this year.
Joseph Hsu, Chairman of MSI, denies speculation of any agreement between his company and Flextronics.
MSI's current motherboard shipment proportions between system vendors (OEMs) and channel (brand) are split approximately 50:50. Currently, the company's OEM business is suffering from declining profits and an overlapping of related resources and personnel--creating an environment that no longer offers brand operation strategies or cost savings.
If MSI does complete the purchase agreement, the company plans to initially outsource all motherboard orders to Flextronics. At a later time, MSI will evaluate cost-saving outsourcing order options with additional OEMsFor more information about MSI, visit http://www.msi.com.tw/.
