Industry Says 'No Way' to Fay at SMTAI in Orlando
August 20, 2008 |Estimated reading time: 1 minute
It was a dark and stormy day. No, this is not the opening of a new trash novel, but it does aptly depict the first day of the SMTA International exhibition. Thankfully for organizers, a first-class international educational conference began Sunday, so Tropical Storm Fay could not rain on their parade too much (insert painful pun groan). In all seriousness, the sun had a lot to do with robust conference attendance. Celestica's Irene Sterian, along with Bill Barthel of Plexus and Marie Cole of IBM, organized an Alternative Energy symposium on Monday that drew strong interest. Of particular interest was DEK's Clive Ashmore, who detailed the similarities between mass imaging for solar applications and traditional EMS processes. But the strongest alternative energy presentation was delivered by lunchtime speaker Jeff Doubrava of Prismark. His keynote presentation left no doubt that he believes solar cell production is not a dot-com-like bubble business, but a proverbial opportunity of a lifetime. Doubrava urged attendees to review any and every way their electronics business can participate in the photovoltaic market. (Stay tuned for a special video feature containing excerpts of Doubrava's keynote presentation available on EMS007 next week.)A second symposium on Evolving Technology also featured a strong group of panelists, including Dr. Ronald Lasky of Indium, Steve Greathouse of Plexus and Dr. Chalres Woychik. Joe Fjelstad of Verdant Electronics delivered that luncheon keynote, discussing solderless and embedded technologies.Monday's two symposiums drew strong enough interest to convince many attendees to arrive Monday, the day before Fay swept through south Florida. Though exhibition attendance was impacted by Orlando International Airport cancelling flights, exhibitors seemed satisfied that the right people had already arrived.
