SMT Names Morey Corp. VP 1st SMT VISIONARY Winner
April 6, 2010 |Estimated reading time: 3 minutes
LAS VEGAS — SMT, the source of engineering solutions for PCB manufacturing, awarded its 1st Annual SMT VISIONARY Award to Taymur Ahmad, VP of operations of The Morey Corporation, for his work bringing lean manufacturing strategy and growth to the EMS provider. The SMT VISIONARY Award recognizes leadership during the recession at an OEM, ODM, or EMS provider. SMT launched the VISIONARY reader award as part of PennWell Corporation’s 100th anniversary to celebrate the drive and initiative of SMT’s reader community.
Taymur Ahmad joined The Morey Corporation at a critical juncture in the U.S.-based electronics manufacturing company’s history. MOREY was a 75-year-old U.S.-based EMS provider suffering growing pains from exponential growth in the past five years. Manufacturing processes and methods of accountability developed for smaller-scale operations were creating inefficiencies, making scalability difficult. Simultaneously, MOREY was planning to offer its own products to the market, launching a major new division. Ahmad implemented a lean manufacturing model and six sigma practices. Eventually, he would drive those practices across overall corporate operations establishing a world-class, continuous improvement culture to underpin growth.
The Morey Corporation implemented Ahmad’s lean manufacturing vision in a pilot program with success, then spreading it across the entire company, as well as their customers and suppliers. Throughout the process, Ahmad organized all manufacturing operations into value streams, making operations exponentially more customer-focused, efficient, and accountable. The lean transformation has reduced the stress on manufacturing workers, reduced customer cycle times and costs, and allowed the company to grow as a “near-sourcing” partner to U.S.-based OEMs. Ahmad created a culture of continuous improvement and innovation, which permeates the organization from senior executives to the shop floor.
SMT is proud to celebrate new thinking and improvement in a long-standing U.S.-based company. “Ahmad and The Morey Corp.’s ability to maintain high customer value while implementing new processes and a new perspective on the business complements SMT’s vision,” said executive editor Meredith Courtemanche. “Honoring MOREY’s lean transformation and growth with the SMT VISIONARY Award is a wonderful way to commemorate our own company’s 100-year anniversary.”

The SMT VISIONARY Award was given to Ahmad during SMT’s 18th Annual SMT VISION Awards ceremony at IPC APEX EXPO in April. SMT produces the SMT VISION Award program annually.
