Highlights: IPC APEX Expo Presentations
March 23, 2010 |Estimated reading time: 3 minutes
— This is a sampling of the many technical papers and posters that will be presented during the conference at IPC APEX Expo, April 6 through 9 in Las Vegas. These include PCB design tutorials, tin whisker growth studies, solar panel discussions, and more.
PCB Matrix’s Tom Hausherr to Present on PCB Design
PCB Matrix, a Valor Computerized Systems Ltd. company that focuses on EDA efficiency, productivity and automation, announces that Tom Hausherr, EDA Library Product Manager, will present a paper titled “The Universal PCB Design Grid System” during Session S04, titled ”Design,” which will take place Tuesday, April 6, 2010 from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Mixing PCB design layout units will compromise perfection every time. PCB design perfection starts with building CAD library parts and quickly moves to part placement, via fanout and trace routing challenges. Outputting data for machine production can be extremely complex or very simple based on the PCB Design Layout units that were used throughout the PCB design process. This presentation reviews one of the single most important, but sometimes overlooked or taken for granted, aspects of the electronics industry ? The PCB design grid system. Since he started schematic and PCB layout more than 36 years ago, Hausherr has been recognized as a top PCB layout designers and PCB mentor in Southern California. He has been involved in over 2,000 PCB layouts during his PCB design career and has trained hundreds on how to design quality PCB layouts. Nihon Superior’s Keith Sweatman to Present on Tin Whiskers
Nihon Superior Co. Ltd., a supplier of advanced soldering and brazing materials, announced that Keith Sweatman will present a paper titled “Effect of Soldering Method, Temperature, and Humidity on Whisker Growth in the Presence of Flux Residues” during session S11 titled “Tin Whiskers,” which is scheduled to take place Wednesday, April 7, 2010 from 9 to 10 a.m. Since the electronics industry moved to lead-free solders that typically have a tin content of more than 95%, there has been concern about the possibility of circuit malfunctions due to whisker growth. It is now generally accepted that whisker growth is a response to compressive stress within the tin crystal and the challenge is to identify and eliminate or at least minimize the processes that can generate such stress. Corrosion has been identified as one source of that stress and in this paper the authors report a study directed at identifying the relationship between the extent of corrosion and the concomitant whisker growth. Printed circuit coupons with an OSP finish were soldered with SAC305 solder using wave, reflow, and hand soldering methods with flux formulations typical of current commercial practice. www.nihonsuperior.co.jp
