PARIS — EPIC, the European Photonics Industry Consortium, released “LEDs: The 2009 Market Review.” The report, which is distributed exclusively to EPIC members, tracks the response of the lighting and display industries to one of the most difficult economic crises in recent years. High-brightness light emitting diodes (HB-LED) and organic light emitting diodes (OLED) unit production figures as well as revenues have been summarized for major players around the world for the two-year period of 2008 and 2009.
The HB-LED sector showed a strong recovery during Q’03 and Q’04 of 2009, led by backlighting of flat-panel displays (FPD). HB-LEDs are underperforming in the general lighting segment due to the presence of lower-cost, energy-efficient lighting solutions involving halogen and fluorescent technologies.
Revenue performance for selected solid-state lighting companies shows that the economic downturn affected all players in the 2nd quarter of 2009.
Performance of bellwether companies is an important indicator of the commercial development of solid-state lighting. In its analysis, EPIC shows that the production of HB- LEDs should reach record levels in 2010 and again in 2011.
