NBS Deploys RFID Intelligent Feeders System
March 5, 2010 |Estimated reading time: 1 minute
SANTA CLARA, CA -- EMS provider NBS installed and deployed a radio frequency identification (RFID) driven intelligent feeder and materials management system throughout the company’s Santa Clara manufacturing facility. This sophisticated traceability technology will enable NBS to electronically track, monitor, match and record components to printed circuit board assemblies (PCBA) while in process, eliminating limited manual logging practices.
The NBS implementation is based upon Juki’s IFS-X2 Intelligent Feeder System and employs contactless RFID technology. This provides access to feeder intelligence in and outside of placement machines, such as off-line feeder trolleys and storage carts. It provides feeder and associated component visibility and precise material management throughout NBS's highly automated facility that opened in June, 2008. “The impact of an error on an entire production lot can easily exceed the initial production cost and even raise serious legal consequences,” observed Michael Maslana, NBS president and CEO, adding that the new system provides totally closed loop tracking of the entire material flow and manufacturing process for error-free production and total traceability.
IFS-X2 supports tracking of all material in various processes for the complete assembly of PCBs. All materials: boards, components, solder paste, flux can be followed from receipt through all processes right down to the individual placement position on the board, including printing, assembly, inspection and soldering. All data is stored in a database which facilitates tracking and the generation of traceability reports. This ensures complete transparency for process validation and error analysis. “While we expect the medical, aerospace and military market segments to immediately embrace its use, the addition of RFID technology also applies well to commercial products,” noted Maslana.
