New Conformal Coatings, Encapsulants, Adhesives, and Other Assembly Materials
February 22, 2010 |Estimated reading time: 3 minutes
— Master Bond debuted a clear conformal coating, a structural adhesive, and a temporary bond adhesive; Rudolph Bros introduced a easy-to-use conformal coating; Fujipoly has new thermal interface gel sheets; Christopher Associates now carries a potting compound for solar junction boxes; and DYMAX offers a spot-curing system and compatible adhesives.Conformal Coating for PCBs
A new printed circuit board coating, SES-3421 from Shin-Etsu Silicones uses a unique silicone technology. The product is 100% solids with fast, no-energy, room-temperature cure. It is non-corrosive and offers self-priming adhesion from a single-component chemistry. SES-3421 isUL recognized. Rudolph Bros. & Company, Fax: (800) 600-9508; www.rudolphbros.com
Conformal Coating for Better Electronic Circuitry Performance
UV10LV is a clear, non-conductive protective conformal coating designed to restrain the impact of moisture, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes on electronic circuitry and components. Its high-resilience bonds will not deteriorate when exposed to adverse environmental conditions including severe heat and moisture. It cures rapidly upon exposure to UV light at room temperature. Thermal Gel Sheets
Sarcon GR-Ae is an extremely soft thermal interface material (TIM). The silicone gel compound is manufactured in sheet form and is designed to efficiently transfer heat from the source to a nearby heatsink. The material's physical properties suit filling air gaps between delicate and uneven components. This high-performance gap filler compound offers a thermal conductivity of 1.3 W/m°K with a thermal resistance as low as .43 °C in2/W. The gap filler pad is available in thicknesses from 0.5 to 5.0 mm. Sarcon GR-Ae can be ordered in sheets up to 200 x 300 mm or die-cut to exact application specifications. Fujipoly America Corporation is a wholly owned subsidiary of Fuji Polymer Industries Co. Ltd. of Japan, http://www.fujipoly.com
Silicone Potting Compound for Solar Module Assembly
The Tonsan 1521 silicone potting compound is a two-part silicone material used in junction boxes to provide reliable sealing for diodes and connectors. The material shows strong adhesion to PPO, TPT, brass and tin-plated leads. Additionally, aging and heat resistance are proven in rugged weather conditions. The material suits automatic dispensing applications. Christopher Associates, www.christopherweb.com
Structural Adhesive With Aramid Fiber Reinforced Epoxy
Comprised of an aramid fiber reinforced epoxy adhesive for high-performance structural bonding, EP30R features outstanding dimensional stability and enhanced impact resistance. The adhesive produces high-strength bonds to metals, glass, ceramics, vulcanized rubbers and many plastics. The structural adhesive is recommended for use over the temperature range of -60° to +250°F and it resists thermal cycling and chemicals. Cure shrinkage of only 0.0003 inches per square inch preserves precise dimensional tolerances of assembled parts. Severe mechanical or thermal stresses do not weaken adhesive performance. The cured epoxy is an excellent electrical insulator. Master Bond, http://www.masterbond.com/prodtype.html
High-Intensity LED-Cure System and Compatible Adhesives
BlueWave LED Prime UVA high-intensity spot-curing system offers many advantages over conventional spot-curing systems including no consumable bulbs to change, no warm-up, cool cures, and constant intensity up to 50,000 hours. The BlueWave LED Prime UVA generates curing energy using high-intensity LEDs. This system delivers maximum curing energy output through a 5-mm-diameter lightguide, with an adjustable output up to >15 W/cm2. The relatively narrow frequency band produced by LEDs generates cooler curing temperatures for temperature-sensitive substrates and results in reduced power consumption. The lamp is RoHS compliant, offers user-friendly operation, and boasts a useful LED life of up to 50,000 hours. This unit is CE Marked for global use. Specially formulated LED-curable adhesives have been developed for use with the new BlueWave LED Prime UVA. These adhesives range from ultra-fast (less than 2 seconds) to fast cure to accommodate industrial and medical device bonding, potting, and coating assembly needs. They bond in seconds to a wide variety of substrates including glass, metal, ABS, PC, PVC, and many others. DYMAX Corporation, www.dymax.com
Fast-cure Temporary Adhesive
UV14-3 UV cure adhesive is designed for temporary bonding applications. This electrically insulating compound offers excellent vibration and shock resistance as well as resistance to thermal cycling and thermal shock. Master Bond UV14-3 can be cured in much greater section thickness (up to 1/8 inch deep) compared to most conventional UV type systems, making it of value for various electronic and opto-electronic potting and encapsulation applications. Disassembly can be easily accomplished upon exposure to most conventional solvents such as acetone, MEK, etc. Master Bond, http://www.masterbond.com/prodtype.html#puv
