South Africa Electronics Show: NEW SA Launches in March
February 15, 2010 |Estimated reading time: 3 minutes
— South Africa will host, along with the World Cup, an electronics exhibition promising to focus the attention of the global electronics industry on all things South African. Having long required an event to support its innovative electronics industry, March 9–10 will see electronics professionals from around the world assemble at Johannesburg’s Sandton Convention Centre in South Africa for the inaugural NEW SA exhibition. The tradeshow will feature exhibitors, trade associations, technical seminar programs, and more.
Exhibits
National Electronics Week (NEW) is applying its successful formula from U.K. tradeshows to the South African market. The show is attracting the support of exhibitors such as Actum Electronics, Altium SA, Avnet Kopp, Brabek, Communica, Dizzy Enterprises, EBV SA, Goepel Electronics Ltd., Juki, MyData Automation Ltd, Radel, RS Components SA, Testerion and Zetech, to name a few. The show is also being supported by ADEC, South Africa’s leading trade association, along with respected industry body SMART Group SA.
Educational Opportunities
In addition to being able to evaluate leading-edge technologies on the show floor, NEW SA 2010 attendees can also take part in widespread educational opportunities as part of its dedicated support for a wide range of market sectors. The show will cover Design & Development, Embedded, EMS, Photonics & Laser, Production Assembly, Solar & Green Design, Test & Measurement and Wireless.
Microsoft is providing a unique event for South African companies and developers intending to use Microsoft Windows Embedded technologies for their products and projects. The company is hosting a free, one-day course exploring the five major Windows Embedded technologies. The exclusive Microsoft course gives those attending relevant product and technical information in addition to practical experience through hands-on labs and exercises. The informal nature of the course also provides an opportunity to discuss specific projects and products with technology experts and members of the Windows Embedded team. Combined with the National Electronics Week South Africa 2010 exhibition, the course is intended for companies that have little or no previous experience with Windows Embedded products, but which have an embedded or real-time product or appliance that they are developing. Email Claire@new-expo.co.uk to register for the course. The team at Advanced Rework Technology (ART) will be running two officially certified IPC instructor-level training courses alongside the show. Visitors can choose from IPC-A-610 Acceptability of Electronic Assemblies, or IPC/WHMA-A-620 Requirements and Acceptance for Cable and Wire Harness Assemblies. ART will also be running a range of one-day IPC Training Certification courses at the show, spanning lead-free soldering, crimping and ESD control.
In addition to the ART training workshops and seminars, the SMART Group will also be running a free technical seminar program during the show. Being led by some of the association’s most respected members, the program will feature practical guides to critical manufacturing disciplines such as printing, wave soldering, reflow, and rework and repair. The SMART seminar line-up will also show visitors how to improve yield with AOI and X-ray technologies, in addition to how to improve paste with the SMART Standard.
Other educational highlights include a presentation by Ocean Optics’ Roland Kuijvenhoven who will be examining Spectroscopy in Field Applications.
A Platform for Growth
Located in the heart of the region’s business, hotel and entertainment district, NEW SA 2010 combines everything the electronics industry needs to consolidate and refine its place on the world stage. Backed by excellent transport links, Sandton Convention Centre is an ideal setting for business networking. Commenting on the show, event director Claire Saunders explains: “I’m delighted to be bringing NEW to South Africa, especially since the industry has long deserved a show such as this. NEW SA 2010 is a serious platform for growth.”
