Proposals Sought: Market and Technology Outlook for Military Electronics

BANNOCKBURN, IL On behalf of its members, IPC Association Connecting Electronics Industries hopes to commission a study or parts of a study on the military electronics market and technology trends, and outlook for the future. The study would inform PCB fabs, EMS providers, and OEMs, as well as the supply chain supporting electronics assembly.
About two-thirds of IPC's members are in North America. The geographic scope of the study will probably focus on the U.S. military market, but other regions of interest include China, Israel and the EU. Consultants with experience in these other markets are welcome to propose optional add-ons to the project covering these markets.
The study should identify the major segments of the military electronics market and cover the relevant product types and technologies in each. It should include data on the size and recent growth of these segments, as well as forecasts of future growth. Emerging technologies with potential military applications will also be important.
A proposed outline includes, but need not be limited to, the following product categories and issues pertaining primarily to U.S. military electronics:
- • Size, composition, market drivers and technology trends in the current market segments including weapons; platform systems (aircraft, ships, tanks); missiles; battlefield command, control, and communications; communications, satellites, and space systems; warrior systems (radio, night vision, etc.); battle simulation and training systems; unmanned aerial vehicles.• Market drivers, including volume price, interconnection density, material/electrical performance;• How emerging technologies will affect military electronics;• Issues and trends in military electronics requirements, including mil spec and ITAR requirements;• Potential additional topics include the market and outlook for military electronics in China, Israel, and the European Union.
Focusing on electronics and the opportunities for the EMS, PCB and supplier industries, the study should assess the major technology and market trends in the various segments of the military electronics market. It should include specific market sizes and forecasts related to these opportunities, targeted to the interests of all segments of the electronic interconnect industry. Users of the report should find information that helps them understand the military electronics market and to position their businesses to meet the demands of the market and capture the opportunities.
Contractors are encouraged to offer separate bids for the various component parts of the project. This will enable IPC to identify any parts that may be done in-house and select the best bids for each part of the study. If more than one contractor is engaged to develop the parts of the study, the report will be published as a series of articles. Each section of the study should begin with a brief executive summary. All research must be current and it is expected that some primary research will be necessary to update and augment existing sources.
It is anticipated that the complete finished report will be about 30 to 50 pages in length. Where appropriate, color graphs and diagrams that effectively illustrate the findings and convey key trends and issues should be included. IPC's target date for completion of the full report is September 18, 2009.
Response to this request for proposal is due by Friday, June 26, 2009. Proposals must include a description of the proposed research methods and the deliverable, timeframe for completion including key interim deadlines, fees and terms of payment.
