Following are the outreach initiatives, industry recognitions, new hires and promotions, and more announcements from suppliers like Zestron America, Cognex, Allied, Kraydenmex, Fine Line Stencil, The Morey Corp., DEK Solar, Electronic Interconnect Technology, IPC, Balver Zinn, iNEMI, and Seica.
Cognex Corporation named Tom Nash as president of its Surface Inspection Systems Division (SISD), reporting to Robert J. Shillman, Ph.D., chairman and CEO of Cognex. SISD specializes in developing turnkey vision systems to inspect the surfaces of metals, paper, plastics, and other materials manufactured in a continuous process. Nash takes over management of this division from Markku Jaaskelainen, Ph.D., who is building a team to develop and market a low-cost and easy-to-use PC-based vision system for inspecting the surfaces of materials. Nash joins Cognex after serving as VP of operations and marketing for BTU International. He's previously served as president of CIMCIS Ltd., a start-up software company. Nash has also worked for two divisions of the Black & Decker Corporation. He holds a bachelor's from Boston College and an MBA from Babson College. www.cognex.com.
Allied Electronics has signed a distribution agreement with Nicomatic to distribute its portfolio of connectors. Allied will carry a broad range of products from Nicomatic, including microconnectors, connectors for PCB, and flat flex cables and jumpers. FINE LINE STENCIL, a division of FCT Assembly, purchased an advanced stencil laser, the LPKF MultiCut stencil laser. At 15,000 apertures per hour, the laser is five times faster than previous-generation stencil lasers. It boasts a 19-µm-diameter laser beam (half the diameter of previous-generation stencil lasers) and the latest linear motor technology, aperture quality, and registration. The new MultiCut laser is located at its Memphis facility where stencil orders can be shipped up to midnight. www.finelinestencil.com.
ZESTRON America participated in the 2nd Annual I-Race 5K hosted by Image Church to benefit MANNA Worldwide. The event was held at Leesylvania State Park, raising thousands of dollars to help feed children in third-world communities in Asia. MANNA strives to partner with individuals and organizations of like mind to reach the lost and needy around the world. The main objectives of MANNA worldwide are to start new churches and to help needy children. Staff members formed Team ZESTRON and competed in the event, noting that the company understands its role with the community, and the social responsibilities that they have. Taymur Ahmad, The Morey Corp.The Morey Corporation named S. Taymur Ahmad as VP of operations. He previously was director of global operations for Philips Lighting Electronics, and also worked with Textron and Alcoa. His areas of focus will include implementing lean manufacturing and he plans to enhance Morey's manufacturing capabilities. He holds lean six sigma expert certification, statistical process control certification, and MBA with a focus on operations from the Business School of Lausanne, Switzerland, and a bachelor's in mechanical engineering from the University of Iowa. www.moreycorp.com.
Two new appointments are part of DEK's development roadmap, focused on delivering innovation, process support, and service in the photovoltaic arena and extending DEK Solar's global capacity. Zhang Jun joins the DEK Solar team in China as customer support engineer; Jens Katschke takes the role of business development manager to support DEK's solar activities in Western Europe. As alternative energy customer support engineer, Zhang Jun brings three years of experience at DEK. Working with DEK for the past four years, Jens Katschke's focus has been on SMT applications and semiconductor application projects. www.deksolar.com.
Electronic Interconnect Technology (EI) is the recipient of the Illinois Governor's Pollution Prevention Awards (P2) for 2007. EI satisfied stringent evaluation criteria applied to their implementation of P2 projects/technologies: waste volume/toxicity reduction; economic benefits; raw material, labor, energy, water, and disposal cost savings; management commitment; benefits to workers, community, environment; and other elements. The company initiated several projects to decrease chemical consumption and waste generation by 1045% for eight major chemicals. The liquid hazardous waste generated was reduced by 40% in a period of two years, which is almost 40,000 gallons per year. They also substituted less hazardous chemicals in other processes and eliminated in-house consumption of lead-bearing materials. www.eiconnect.com.
Materials distributor Kraydenmex added Chomerics products to its distribution. Chomerics produces RFI and EMI shielding and thermal interface materials (TIMs), and has named Kraydenmex as its exclusive manufacturer's representative in Mexico. www.parker.com/chomerics and www.krayden.com.
IPC Association Connecting Electronics Industries now offers its Website in German. Almost all of the pages have been translated, including key features such as IPC news, weekly feature articles, and environmental policy issues. IPC Web content has been available in Chinese since 2003. IPC plans to have the site translated to Japanese next. www.ipc.org, then select "Deutsch."
Balver Zinn selected Holders Technology as distributor for its PCB fabrication business in India. Holders will provide customers in India with local access to Balver Zinn's range of solder for PCB applications, including bar, billet, pellets, and plate for galvanic and hot air leveling (HASL) processes. Balver Zinn cited Holders' 35 years experience, international operation, and expertise. Based in Mysore in the state of Karnataka, Southern India, Holders Technology services all the key manufacturing regions of India. www.balverzinn.com.
Robert C. Pfahl Jr., Ph.D., VP of global operations for the International Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (iNEMI), received an Electronics Goes Green 2008+ award at the EGG 2008+ conference hosted by the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration IZM, in cooperation with the Technical University Berlin. Pfahl received the award "for his commitment to environmental protection and inspiring ideas concerning sustainable development in technology and business solutions." Prior to joining iNEMI in 2002, Pfahl served with Motorola Labs R&D. He participated in the National Research Council's "The Greening of Industrial Ecosystems" in 2004, and received the Electronics Manufacturing Technology Award from the IEEE Components, Packaging and Manufacturing Technology Society (CPMT) the next year. Pfahl was also a recipient of the 1991 U.S. EPA Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award in recognition of his efforts to eliminate the use of CFCs in the electronics industry. www.inemi.org.
Seica SpA opened a new customer demo and support center in Munich, Germany. ATE equipment is installed for demos, education, and support for their German, Austrian, and Swiss clients. The showroom is operated by Bernd Hauptmann and Seica Team Germany. Customers can benchmark and perform evaluations using the Firefly selective soldering system with VIVA software, PILOT flying probe system with two to eight test probes, and the STRATEGY in-circuit/functional tester (ICT/FT).
