OK International Debuts Soldering and Rework Systems to Increase Throughput, Control
October 24, 2008 |Estimated reading time: 1 minute
GARDEN GROVE, Calif. OK International launched the Metcal MX-5000 Series soldering and rework system with increased power and an enhanced handpiece with energy and tip-saving features. The series targets high-performance hand soldering on complex assemblies.
Lead-free processes, multilayer boards, large ground planes, and high component packing density are accounted for in the system operation. Proprietary SmartHeat Technology is coupled with 80 W power for fast response to load conditions with high levels of control. The system reportedly will not overshoot and recovers quickly. The microprocessor-controlled MX-5000 Series also incorporates a built-in digital power indication display with continuous feedback.
The series comprises different system configurations to address specific applications. Available configurations are determined by the handpiece/s to be used: Metcal Advanced, Metcal UltraFine for micro-soldering applications, Metcal MX-PTZ precision tweezers handpiece for SMD rework, and the MX-DS1 thru-hole desoldering handpiece. The STTC and SMTC range of tip cartridges, used with MX-500 systems, also can be used with the MX-5000 Series systems.
The MX-5000 series also adds the Metcal TipSaver workstand with Auto-Sleep function. When the users place the handpiece in this workstand, power is reduced substantially, which can reduce energy usage and improve tip life. The system incorporates a programmable "PowerSave" mode that shuts off power to the handpiece after a user-selected time is exceeded.
