IMEC, Taiyo Nippon Sanso Collaborate on Green LEDs
October 6, 2008 |Estimated reading time: Less than a minute
LEUVEN, Belgium and OSAKA, Japan Nanoelectronics research institute IMEC and semiconductor company Taiyo Nippon Sanso Corp. (TNSC) will jointly develop manufacturing technology for high-efficiency LED devices. This is TNSC's first collaboration with an advanced research center based in Europe.
There is an increasing demand to develop brighter green LEDs for future applications such as backlights for high-vision LCD TVs, according to the partners. Under the agreement, TNSC and IMEC will develop high-efficiency green LED device manufacturing technology based on IMEC's compound semiconductors device technology. Research is mainly carried out at the IMEC facilities in Leuven and builds on IMEC's experience in strain engineering on large wafer diameter, supported by in-situ growth monitoring.
"The relationship with IMEC will enhance Taiyo Nippon Sanso's position as a MOCVD tool maker in the LED compound semiconductor market," said Mike Hara, senior managing director of TNSC.
