In-line Diffusion EquipmentThe Meridian line includes a second-generation spray coater with top- and bottom-side phosphorus coating, along with a quartz-lined diffusion furnace. The line expands on the original platform with improved cell efficiency. Both furnace and coater use corrosion-resistant materials that minimize the risk of process contamination, said to produce more efficient solar cells. BTU International, North Billerica, Mass. and Shanghai, China, www.btu.com.
ICT Software UpgradesUpgrades to the 3070 in-circuit tester (ICT) are available through normal support contracts or via one-time software updates for 3070 users. Upgrading to the latest software ensures in field compatibility on existing equipment. A key component of updates 7.1 and 7.2 includes 1149.6 capabilities using the latest chip technology used in newer board designs. The updates target a reduction in large net counts, allowing use of smaller fixtures; fewer wires, for increased reliability; and reduced fixture weight. The upgrades to the test programming process reportedly reduce test costs. Solution Sources Programming (SSP), www.ssprog.com, for Agilent Technologies, Santa Clara, Calif., www.agilent.com.
Lead-free Paste RemoverBIOACT EC-88 defluxer, made with AquaEdge technology, suits cleaning lead-free, no-clean, and high-temperature solder pastes. It has been tested for AIM, Alpha/Cookson, Heraeus, Indium, Kester, Multicore, Qualitek, Senju, and Umicore pastes. The product's cleaning power, high flux loading capacity, low foaming property, and low environmental impact are benefits. It can be used to clean assemblies, components, and microcircuits, and is available for aqueous spray equipment. Petroferm Cleaning Products, a division of Petroferm Inc., Gurnee, Ill., www.petroferm.com.
PCB Masking TapeScapa 519 is a highly conformable, heat-resistant tape designed to mask PCBs during solder stripping and nickel/gold plating of finger contacts. The non-silicone tape protects large areas of PCBs from chemical fumes and splashes. Scapa 519 consists of a conformable polyester film single coated with a rubber adhesive that removes cleanly and offers controlled adhesion. The product's high-strength backing allows for easy application and removal. This chemically-resistant tape withstands temperatures as high as 250°F. Scapa North America, Windsor, Conn., www.scapana.com.
Automatic PCB Cleaning SystemsFully automatic Trident PCB cleaning systems remove flux and solder paste residues from post-reflowed circuit assemblies. Flux types cleaned include rosin, water-soluble, and no-clean. "Focus-wash" technology, featuring randomly arranged spray bars and 159 diffusion areas, directs more fluid flow into concentrated areas for greater impingement on densely populated, low-standoff SMT assemblies. An oscillating board rack and counter-rotating spray arms ensure higher coverage. An onboard cleanliness tester controls the cleaning process automatically. A statistical process control (SPC) data logger records vital process information. Each system offers four outputs; two of the three models available include automatic closed-loop wash solution recycling. Manncorp, San Diego, Calif., www.manncorp.com.
X-ray Microanalysis SystemThe Genesis Apex X-ray microanalysis system is designed to improve key components of accuracy: X-ray detector, digital pulse processing electronics, and analytical software. It incorporates the Apollo SDD for EDS analysis with a range of collection efficiencies, energy resolutions, and low-energy performance. A digital pulse processor DPP II eliminates pulse pileup from the high count rate capability of the SDD. The tool can handle over 1,000,000 cps. It also includes Genesis 6 software with EXpert ID routine for peak identification. EDAX, unit of AMETEK Materials Analysis Division, Mahwah, N.J., www.edax.com.
Essemtec's stencil printer with integrated cleaning.Semiautomatic Printer The SP150 screen/stencil printer targets small- and medium-size enterprises with integrated stencil cleaning, controlled printing process, space-saving front drawer, and digital vision system. The machine reproducibly prints fine structures in large series. The printer automatically recognizes if the substrate is misaligned. The print cycle is released when alignment is reached. A pneumatic printing head holds two squeegees that automatically spread the print pressure over the squeegee length. A stencil underside cleaning system is integrated into the SP150, mounted directly on the front drawer. Product changeover is aided by clear settings and a magnetic PCB holder. Users can access to the company's remote maintenance system and their customer portal. Essemtec AG, Aesch, Switzerland, www.essemtec.com.
Thick-film ChipsThe RPC series is a line of surge-withstanding thick-film chips offered from 2512 down to 0805, in resistance values from 0.27 Ω up to 22 Meg, and tolerances as low as 5%. The RPC offers pulse power handling of greater than 10× the equivalent standard thick-film chip resistor in the larger sizes. It also reportedly has higher pulse handling compared to the equivalent size SMD melf. Stackpole Electronics Inc. Raleigh, N.C., www.sielect.com.
Vacuum Tweezer ToolsThe self-contained, manually operated V8901-HLM-B vacuum tweezer handes SMD packages using six cups and probes. Cup sizes are 6.35, 9.53, and 12.7 mm. The tool comes with two of each of the cups, one on a straight probe and the other on a bent probe. ESD-sage, it has no hoses or batteries. The main body tube is machined aircraft aluminum. ESD-safe and battery-operated, the PAC-VAC vacuum tweezer P/N V3200 provides portability for handling. The tips included allow a variety of SMD parts from 2.54 mm to several inches in diameter to be handled. The mini high-performance diaphragm vacuum pump generates up to 16" of mercury with an open-air flow of 750 ml. This tool is made with all ESD-safe materials. Included in the kit are the vacuum generator, a 9-V alkaline battery, push-button vacuum pen with 4 ft. coiled vacuum hose, and a set of nine vacuum tips for handling different part sizes. Virtual Industries Inc., Colorado Springs, Colo., www.vacuumtweezer.com.
