June 19, 2008 |Estimated reading time: 1 minute
MONTREAL Continuous technological development, digital options, and declining price points are among reasons for the growth of portable electronic products globally, according to "Global Portable Electronics Market," by Electronics.ca Publications. The analyst firm reports that the global portable industry recorded a phenomenal year in 2007, with almost all industry sectors reporting growth.
MP3 players, portable game consoles and notebooks remained the fastest growing end-use segment of the portable electronic industry. However, in near future, this segment is not expected to grow at same pace. The report is written as a forecast for the various components of the industry to help clients evaluate their growth prospects. The forecast in this report is not based on a complex economic model, but is intended as a rough guide to the direction in which the industry is likely to move, reports Electronics.ca.
Key findings include data that suggests global mobile phone shipments grew by 12.3% year over year (YOY) in 2007 in volume terms. In future, this market will be largely driven by replacement market and strong demand from Asia. Also, the global notebook market surged by 23% YOY in 2007. In developed countries such as the U.S., it is expected that the sales of notebooks will exceed that of desktops for the first time in 2008.
In general, falling price points along with enhanced features, stronger consumer awareness, and increasing customization remains the major driving force for the global portable electronics industry. Portable in-car navigation systems remain an under-penetrated sector, providing opportunities to players in portable navigation market.
Key elements of the report include evaluation of the mobile handset demand; digital audio; and price, features, and consumer awareness. Statistics are provided on mobile handsets, camera phones, smartphones, PDAs, notebooks/laptops, portable gaming and media consoles, digital cameras, and portable navigation systems.
