Following are new products introduced to the testing market, pick-and-place innovations, PCB depanelers and other tooling, products in the emerging conformal coating sector, connectors for LCD assemblies, new packaging for sensitive devices, inspection tools for PCB fabricators, and more.
Motorized DepanelizerThe K4000 PCB depanelizer can singulate skip-routed PCB panels up to 24" long. A linear bottom blade and circular top blade are fabricated from tool-grade steel and can be re-sharpened several times. Guarded foot switch and left and right blade guards protect operators. Front and back supports, as well as take-up table, are height adjustable. Options include a light-beam safety curtain across the blade fronts, and conveyor belt with component-detecting IR sensor. Tooling for PCB panel alignment also is available. FKN Systek, Framingham, Mass., www.fknsystek.com.
Component VerificationThe FLX-CVU option for the FLX2011 pick-and-place system is designed for high-reliability industries. Aircraft builders and other security-relevant industries do not rely on what is written on a reel. At least some components per reel, sometimes even every single component, must be tested before placement. The option FLX-CVU allows FLX2011 systems to measure and test the resistance, capacitance, inductance, and the polarity of discrete components directly on the machine. All measurements are recorded with high accuracy and stored in a log file. Essemtec, Aesch, Switzerland, www.essemtec.com.
Test ProberThe S1 test system is designed to be precise and fast. It includes eight test probes. The system can test at up to 400 measurements per second. S1 testers target miniaturized products with limited test access and high density. IDAM, Suhl, Germany; and atg LM, Wertheim and Wunstorf, Germany, www.atg-test-systems.de.
Conformal CoatingMeeting MIL-I-46058C and IP-CC-830B, Multi-Cure 987 is formulated for rapid cure at room temperature under UV and/or visible light. Coating in shadowed areas on densely populated PCBs can cure with heat rather than light. The 987 formula is designed for better wetting on circuitry and components than the prior generation. It fluoresces blue under black lights for inspection. The coating is chemically resistant and optimized for dispensing in 0.001 to 0.003" thicknesses. DYMAX Corporation, Torrington, Conn., www.dymax.com.
LED Thermal ManagementAnotherm substrate technology was enhanced with a thermally efficient glass dielectric material that withstands higher voltages and enables increased light output for LEDs. Designated Anotherm Plus, the anodized aluminum material enhances thermal management for power LEDs in applications such as gaming and vending machines, outdoor signage and display, aquarium lighting, emergency vehicle lighting, as well as architectural and general lighting. Compared to other metal-core PCBs, the Anotherm Plus substrates reportedly demonstrate improved adhesion and pull strength as well as higher dielectric strength. High thermal conductivity and low thermal resistance characteristics help increase the LEDs' lifespan. Anotherm Plus technology comprises a thermally conductive aluminum alloy substrate with a thermally conductive glass dielectric material that is printed directly onto the substrate, providing thermal transfer for LED assemblies that are mounted directly onto the substrates. Tacky Silicone AdhesivesSA6000 Series adhesives are said to offer the ease of acrylic adhesives but with silicone adhesive's performance in extreme temperatures. The series targets high- and low-temperature gasketing and sealing; vibration damping in a variety of temperatures; and applications calling for limited flammability in the automotive, aerospace, industrial ,and flexible electronics industries. The products operate at temperatures from -300° to +500°F, and have a tack level of 760 grams (ASTM 2979). The adhesives are flexible and breathable. They take up to 72 hours to cure, and the material's tackiness will hold the bond until the adhesive cures, facilitating automated assembly. SA6000 products are available as transfer tape, single-coated construction, and in a double-coated construction. FLEXcon Company Inc., Spencer, Mass., www.myflexcon.com/pphome.
Protective Peel PackagingAn innovative peel packaging solution for the North American market is designed to protect fragile ICs during shipping, storing, and handling. It is available for ICs with case sizes measuring 12 × 12 mm and 14 × 14 mm. The ICs are placed within protective, recyclable plastic cells, which are then sealed with an anti-static lid. Offered at no extra charge, peel packaging provides a reduced risk of moisture ingress and easy product identification with stock number and the manufacturer's part number marked on the back. The proprietary peel packaging was developed in-house, in partnership with Farnell and Antistat, a company providing supply chain and packaging solutions to the electronics, medical, and automotive markets. Newark , Chicago, Ill., www.newark.com.
Conformal Coating Inspection SystemThe B-UV automated conformal coating inspection system automates the inspection process for quality, consistency, and thickness of coatings under UV lighting, using proprietary inspection algorithms. The B-UV's advanced inspection algorithms provide automated inspection for coverage, selected areas of non-coverage, delamination, cracks, and bubbles. With no programming required, the inspection setup is fast and intuitive, typically requiring only a few minutes, according to the company. A known good board is used by the system to learn the coverage and non-coverage areas. Results can be stored and reviewed off-line at any time. The B-UV also reads all common barcodes for product traceability. An optional inspection software upgrade for component presence and location is available. Whitepaper on ESD and Overcurrent Reference LayoutThe whitepaper details the benefits of reference layout that incorporates ESD and overcurrent protection for HDMI 1.3 interfaces. Designers can use the reference layout to meet the HDMI 1.3 specification, provide IEC 61000-4-2 ESD protection, and speed time to market. "HDMI ESD Protection Without Sacrificing Performance — Adding ESD Protection to HDMI, Even at 3.4GHz, Just Became Easier" explores the requirements and pitfalls of designing ESD protection into HDMI 1.3 systems. For instance, the HDMI 1.3 specification doubles the previous data rate to 3.4 Gbit/sec. per differential signal pair, posing challenges in implementing solid board design with low capacitance to ensure adequate signal integrity. Serial EEPROM DevicesA 10-member family of serial EEPROM devices with a single I/O bus interface, based on UNI/O memory-device protocol, the 11XX010, 11XX020, 11XX040, 11XX080, and 11XX160 can support any data rate from 10 to 100 kHz. The 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 Kbit EEPROMs are available in a three-pin SOT-23 package and other higher pin count packages. The UNI/O bus and EEPROM devices were developed in response to market trends toward smaller consumer-electronic products with more features and functionality. A smaller MCU and smaller connectors can be used with the single I/O interface. These devices include status registers, software write protection, noise filtering, and robust ESD protection. It is able to track the host MCU's serial data rate over 10 to 100 kHz, so most clock frequencies used by the MCU can be supported. Existing hardware can be used with the available UNI/O software drivers for quick tests. Key applications for the UNI/O memory devices include portable/handheld and battery-powered devices in the automotive, medical, consumer electronic, and Industrial markets. PCB Inspection Technology The Machvision Hole Doctor is an advanced hole verification system for printed circuit fabrication applications. The system is in-line and conveyorized for inspection and verification of hole count, hole diameters, locational accuracy, and hole quality on rigid, microvia/HDI, or flexible PCBs. It can be used after drilling, desmearing, plating, or for final inspection and quality control prior to shipment. The Hole Doctor can be programmed using either "golden board" or drill files, and can inspect hole diameters from 0.006 to 0.400" and up to 16:1 aspect ratios on panels from 0.010 to 0.400" thick. Defects found include plugged holes, improper hole diameters, poor drilling accuracy, and other critical parameters. SPC software is included in this Windows-based system.
