Following are the new products released to start 2008 in materials, cleaning, rework, sockets, plating technology, selective soldering, dispensing, component feeders, and more. Highlighted are introductions from Henkel, Teknek, PDR, Ironwood, Technic, ACE, I&J Fisnar, IPTE, IMS, and American Hakko Products.
Phase-change TIMPowerstrateXtreme Dispensable (PSX-D) is a phase-change thermal interface material in a paste medium that shares performance characteristics with traditional phase-change films. The liquid PSX-D can be applied at various thicknesses determined by the application, via stencil, needle, screen, or manual printing. When heated, the material flows, conforming to heatsink and device surfaces and expelling air. This is said to reduce thermal impedance. It also is reworkable. Henkel Corporation, Irvine, Calif., www.henkel.com/electronics.
Contact Cleaning EquipmentThe Surface Mount Clean Machine contact cleaner is designed to work with any SMT production environment, boasting a multilingual operator interface, integrated anti-static protection, side access for replenishing rolls, and a bypass feature for populated PCBs. It uses four elastomer rollers and two rolls of pre-sheeted adhesive film to remove contaminants about 1 µm from single- and double-sided PCBs. An adjustable internal conveyor system allows cleaning up to 3 mm from edges. The system is SMEMA and PLC Talk & Listen compliant. Optional additions include a barcode reader and external static monitoring system. Teknek, Renfrew, Scotland, www.teknek.com.
Modular Rework SystemThe IR-XT5 rework system is designed to provide SMT and BGA rework capabilities based on a user's volumes, business, and board and component types. The basic unit is benchtop, and all units are upgradeable as needs dictate. Each configuration includes a redesigned chassis, controllable IR heaters, ThermoActiv V4 software, and closed-loop automatic thermal control. Upgradeable features range from a workholder to pickup system, vision, and heat sensors. Options include component nests, backheating, and preheating. PDR, West Sussex, U.K., www.pdr.co.uk.
BGA ZIF SocketsMade for STMicro 27- and 35-mm BGA packages respectively, the SG-BGA-6246 and 6245 sockets operate at up to 8-GHz bandwidth with less than 1-dB insertion loss. They dissipate up to 4.5 W at 40°C and handle up to 100 W with enhanced heat sinking. Contact resistance is 23 mΩ/pin; pin inductance equals 10.15 nH. The 1-mm-pitch elastomer sockets require 2.5-mm chip clearance. Ironwood Electronics, Burnsville, Minn., www.ironwoodelectronics.com.
Cyanide-free Silver PlatingThe Cy-less II-W silver-plating process chemistry for component and connector applications is designed to distribute evenly. Environmentally friendly, it is reportedly high performance. The product does not yellow, enabling easier quality inspection. Technic, Inc., Cranston, R.I., www.technic.com.
Selective Soldering UpgradesAdvanced solder-delivery and inert-atmosphere-control features are designed to improve lead-free selective soldering, controlling solder replenishment and mitigating the effects of nitrogen temperature of solder nozzle waves. A nitrogen flow monitor uses nitrogen pressure levels to indicate the level of solder in the selective soldering system's pot, information which then helps initiate and control solder replenishment. Keeping pot levels exact reportedly increases stability and repeatability. A super-heated nitrogen path is said to enhance performance of flowing solder from pot to wave to solder joint. The super-heated nitrogen supply means nitrogen is preheated along the entire solder travel path. ACE Production Technologies, Spokane, Wash., www.ace-protech.com.
Digital Fluid DispenserThe model SL101 is a RoHS-compliant and cost-effective benchtop dispensing system. With a self-teach feature, the machine can automatically cycle 10 programs to 10 memory locations. Operation modes include auto-cycle, manual-mode, and timed-mode. Dispense ranges from 0.01 to 9999 sec., with dispense output air pressure at 1100 psi. Adjustable suck-back reportedly prevents post-dispense drip or ooze. The system can be controlled remotely, and can be integrated with other dispensing robots from the company. It is available in 110 and 220 V versions. I&J Fisnar, Inc., Fair Lawn, N.J., www.ijfisnar.com.
Radial Tape Feeder UpgradesTwo additional functions are offered with the Radial Tape Feeder, including a body stocking reference cut and vision quality inspection. The body stocking reference cut is designed to ensure all components fed into the insertion machine have exactly equal-length leads. This eliminates original connecting-wire lengths as a factor during insertion. It also targets better solderability. Vision quality inspection is a control feature to prevent components with too large tolerances or poor quality from reaching the insertion stage. The feeder removes faulty parts without machine stop, which is said to increase productivity. The IPTE Group, Genk, Belgium, www.ipte.com.
AlN Resistors and TerminationsThe N-Series high-power resistors and terminations on aluminum nitride (AlN) are available in 0505 to 3725 cases with thicknesses from 0.015" to 0.040". Termination styles include single wrap to groundpad, center stripe, extended wrap, or single-sided with backplane for added power dissipation. Standard resistance is 10 Ω to 2 KΩ, tolerances within 2%. The components are available with platinum/silver RoHS-compliant terminals, pre-tinned platinum/silver, or wire-bondable gold. They suit any application above 10 W. IMS, Portsmouth, R.I., www.ims-resistors.com.
Soldering/Desoldering StationThe Hakko FM-204 desoldering station features a built-in vacuum pump, gun- or pencil-style desoldering handpiece, quick-change composite nozzles, lockout key card for temperature settings, and sleep mode for when the handpiece is in the holder. It can be used for soldering and desoldering. The station's temperature range is 200°450°C. American Hakko Products, Inc., Valencia, Calif., www.hakkousa.com.
