2008 IC Market Drivers Report

PHOENIX Electronics system shipments worldwide grew about 5% in 2007, hitting $1.21 trillion. The market is driven by demand for mobile communications devices, consumer products, notebook PCs, wireless, and automotive electronics, according to IC Insights' 2008 edition of its "IC Market Drivers" report. IC Insights finds that IC sales grew 5% to $220.3 billion this year.
Annually, electronics systems sales will grow an average of 7% through 2011, reaching $1.60 trillion, predicts IC Insights. Shipment value increases in 2007 were low, compared to 614% annual jumps from 2003 to present. 2008 will see 6% growth to $1.29 trillion. Electronics systems' revenues will be shored up through 2011, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7%.
The fastest growth in 2007's electronics markets was seen in high-definition DVD players (96%), video-game consoles (58%), RFID (35%), wireless networks (26%), digital video surveillance (20%), portable digital audio (13%), smartcards (11%), and cellular handsets (9%).
IC sales grew from $209.5 billion in 2006 to $220.3 billion in 2007, according to the IC market drivers report. IC markets will grow 10% to $243.4 billion in 2008. PCs remain the largest end-use segment for ICs, accounting for about $73 billion (33%) of total IC sales in 2007. Projected growth of the PC IC market is forecast to equal the IC industry's 10% CAGR average in the 20062011 timeframe. Cellular handset ICs are second in size this year at nearly $35 billion, 16% of the total. Cellular ICs also are growing faster, reaching a 13% CAGR throughout the forecast period. Digital TV IC sales are estimated at $6.4 billion in 2007 with a projected 19% CAGR in the five-year forecast. The markets for 802.11 wireless network chipsets and Bluetooth ICs are estimated at $1.7 billion and $1.9 billion in 2007, respectively, and growing at 14% and 17% CAGR through 2011.
