How to Publish in SMT
December 31, 1969 |Estimated reading time: 3 minutes
As an engineering- and manufacturing-focused publication centered on surface mount technology, SMT strives to bring to light important R&D and case studies, materials and equipment advances, and trends and business news in electronics manufacturing. We publish original articles, news releases, product launches, opinion pieces, and event itineraries, and want to give you the chance to participate in our monthly print issues and weekly e-newsletters. Following are some guidelines, along with our highlighted topics for 2008, and tips for submitting your news, articles, and other content smoothly.
ArticlesManuscripts considered for publication should contain original and new information in the design, assembly, inspection, and use of electronics assemblies. Features should discuss technical solutions to the challenges facing SMT and device assembly, or significant technological advances. SMT's editorial team reviews all articles for scientific accuracy and value. Authors may be asked to provide additional information to strengthen an article. All article authors should submit an abstract on a topic for consideration to Gail Flower, editor-in-chief, at gailf@pennwell.com and to Meredith Courtemanche, managing editor, at mcourtemanche@pennwell.com.
Tips Authors are encouraged to submit an article 23 months in advance of the topic on our editorial calendar. Abstracts should be sent to our editors as soon as an article's topic is determined. Feature articles, submitted in DOC format, should not exceed 1,600 words in length. They should include 13 supporting figures, illustrations, or charts. Please do not embed any graphic elements into the word document. Figures, tables, charts, and drawings must be sent to the editors as separate files, in JPG, TIF, or BMP format, in high resolution (at least 300 dpi).
ColumnsColumns, such as the Industry View feature, allow members of the SMT community to express opinions in business, trends, and technology. While these columns need not present a technical agenda, they are engineering or manufacturing oriented.
Tips Columns are generally 800950 words in length, and include a headshot for the author. All rules that apply to feature articles for formatting and submission times also are in effect for columns. As with feature articles, all marketing and promotional language shall be removed from the text. Authors of feature articles and columns should include name, title, company, and contact information with each submission. Columns and opinion pieces should be sent to Gail Flower and Meredith Courtemanche for consideration.

NewsSMT covers analyst reports, business partnerships, mergers and acquisitions, facility developments, OEM orders, R&D breakthroughs, personnel appointments, and other important announcements from all aspects of the industry, from an independent EMS provider in the U.S. to a major materials distributing company in Asia to trade associations, and beyond. If your company has an announcement relevant to SMT's audience, submit it to Meredith Courtemanche. SMT's editors will work with your company to evaluate news and provide coverage on our Website, in our weekly e-newsletter, or in our monthly print publications.
Tips SMT's editors will determine where and in what context appropriate news will be delivered to our readers. All marketing and promotional language is removed from news announcements. We often want to learn more details, so please include contact information for follow-up e-mails and phone interviews. All news announcements should include a company's name, location, and Website. Supporting images are encouraged.
Product LaunchesWe focus on materials, design tools, assembly and soldering equipment, process controls and software, test-and-inspection systems, components, and related products that bring an assembly from idea to completion. As new products are launched, SMT offers readers a summary of technical specs, important features, target applications, and benefits.
We also cover the major SMT-related tradeshows IPC Printed Circuits Expo/APEX/Designers Summit, SMTA International, ATExpo, Productronica with exhibitor highlights, previews, and product showcases. Submit your tradeshow previews at least one month in advance of a tradeshow.
Tradeshow and new product announcements should be sent to Meredith Courtemanche.
Tips Whenever possible, include a photo of your product with its announcement. All images submitted to SMT must be at least 300 dpi, high-resolution, and in one of the formats listed above. The more technical information you include with a product announcement, the more value we can present to readers, so please send as much relevant data as possible. As with news announcements, SMT's editors will work with your company on presenting relevant products through our Website, e-newsletter, and print issues.
If you have questions, comments, or wish to become involved, e-mail Meredith Courtemanche (mcourtemanche@pennwell.com) and Gail Flower (gailf@pennwell.com), or visit smtonline.com.
