October 29, 2007 |Estimated reading time: 1 minute
CHICAGO Newark and parent company Premier Farnell plc released the panel of judges selected for the companies' Live Edge Electronic Design for the Global Environment competition, which challenges designers to incorporate electronic components into a product that benefits the environment. Judges include university, government, and business representatives.
Judges include Sir Peter Gershon, chairman of Premier Farnell, fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and a governor of Imperial College; professor Sir David King, U.K. government's chief scientific adviser and head of the Government Office for Science; Mark Kenber, director, The Climate Change Group; Alla Cordery, Ph.D., head of electronic engineering, Oxford; Rob Rodin, president, eConnections USA; Max Huber, president, Sharp Microelectronics; Yu Donghai, dean of electronics engineering, Southeast University, China; and Mingtao Jiang, section chief, information technology development, China Ministry of Information Industry (MII).
Judging criteria cover the application's usefulness, originality, technical merit, and effect on the global environment. Other critical aspects include the design's feasibility, efficient use of energy, end-of-life consideration, how competitors used components, cost optimization, the design dossier, and clarity of supporting documentation. Thus far, the "green" competition has attracted about 3,200 design engineers, students, and other applicants from 102 countries. Registration ends October 31st, with designs due November 30th.
In keeping with the environmentally friendly use of technology theme, Newark and Premier Farnell will award the winning design, as well as five highly commended designs, in an online ceremony on January 31st 2008. The winner will become a judge for the 2008 round of competition.
