SMTA Congratulates 2007 Awards Winners
October 8, 2007 |Estimated reading time: 2 minutes
MINNEAPOLIS The SMTA named recipients of its Founder's Award and other recognitions during its annual meeting at SMTA International (SMTAI), October 711 in Orlando, Fla. The awards celebrate service to the SMTA and the industry in technical, corporate, leadership, and other roles.
SMTA named Jeff Kennedy, director, advanced manufacturing engineering, Celestica, Inc., recipient of the 2007 Founder's Award, for serving and contributing to the SMTA and his industry. An SMTA member since 1988, Kennedy has held various officer positions with the Upper Midwest chapter, and has been involved nationally with SMTA conferences. He launched the SMTA's Medical Electronics Conference, and is responsible for developing the manufacturing/assembly track of papers. He is a prior recipient of the SMTA's Excellence in Leadership award.
Two members were honored with the SMTA's Member of Technical Distinction award: Andrew Mawer, manager, packaging analysis lab, Freescale Semiconductor; and Krishnaswami Srihari, Ph.D., distinguished professor, SUNY Binghamton's Watson School.
Mawer joined the SMTA in 1997 and is recognized for his volunteer work within the association. He's served on the SMTAI technical committee, taught SMTA Academy courses, led development of the Advanced Packaging Workshop at RTP, and serves on the SMTA journal committee. Mawer oversees development of the SMTA's advanced packaging track. He is active in the Austin CTEA chapter. Two of his papers, "Plastic BGA Solder Joint Reliability Considerations" (1994) and "Automotive PBGA Assembly and Board-level Reliability with Lead-free versus Tin/Lead Interconnect" (2000) have received SMTAI "Best of" awards.
Srihari is a distinguished professor of systems science and industrial engineering at the Watson School at SUNY Binghamton (Binghamton, N.Y.), and a seven-year SMTA member. He serves as faculty advisor for the SMTA student chapter at Binghamton University, and also helped form the student chapter at SUNY. A member of the SMTA corporate advisory council, Srihari has authored papers for Pan Pac, SMTAI, SMTA Optoelectronics, SMTA Nepcon, and other tradeshows.
SMTA also named the Excellence in Leadership award winner, Michelle Ogihara, Seika Machinery, and president of the LA/Orange County chapter. She is credited with innovation in increasing membership, involving more corporate members, organizing site tours, and attracting high-level speakers. Ogihara serves on the SMTA international exhibitors committee, chapter leaders committee, and as 2007 co-chair of the SMTA's MSD Council.
For international service, the SMTA recognized Richard Short of Indium Corporation of America with the Excellence in International Leadership award. Short has worked in the SMTA for more than 20 years, and developed the SMTAI 2007 Orlando marketing campaign through the marketing committee and SMTAI exhibitor committee. He created the "Live Chat Room" feature for this event. Short has worked with the SMTA to promote organizational branding and image development through special programs, literature, and logo work. He had a hand in facilitating the SMTA's new Australia and Malaysia chapters and opportunities, and designed the initial SMTA Penang Website.
SMTA presented its Corporate Partnership award to Celestica Inc. (Toronto, Canada), for its support of local chapters, membership in SMTA Global, and work as a corporate member since 1995. Celestica has actively supported SMTA technical programs, and 16 of their engineers have received SMTA certification.
The SMTA also named Chapter of the Year, with the designation going to LA/Orange County, Calif.
