ATExpo in Review: Product Spotlight
December 31, 1969 |Estimated reading time: 3 minutes
ATExpo, September 2527 in Rosemont, Ill., highlighted production equipment and materials, with products from Electrolube, FlexLink Systems, IDENTCO, KUKA, and Unovis, among other exhibitors.
Electrolube debuted its peelable coating mask, PCS, at the show. Water-based and environmentally friendly, the mask is a flexible synthetic acrylic latex with reportedly good solvent resistance, and is non-corrosive to most substrates. It can be used to mask components, connectors, and other sensitive structures during a conformal coating process. PCS targets protection from ingress of conformal coating, such as with pin connectors and IC sockets. Orange on application, it darkens once cured. The mask features high film strength, easy peel, and application by dip, spray, or brush. The company also displayed water-based conformal-coating products, WBPs, formulated to protect electronic circuitry, and Resin Stop fluoropolymer coating. www.electrolube.com.
Zierick Manufacturing Corp. introduced its surface mount insulation-piercing crimp terminal, which the company claims reduces production costs, improves reliability, and ramps processing speeds. The terminal has a flat base and two sidewalls perpendicular to the base. Two insulation-piercing contact spikes protrude from the flat base. Between the contact spikes there is a flat area to facilitate vacuum pick-up and terminal placement. There are two deep score lines near the transition area between the sidewall and the base of the terminal. A terminating machine feeds wire into the connector and makes the termination; the terminal connects the wire to a surface mount PCB. The crimp terminal targets applications wherein numerous serial connections are made to one single wire, as for LED assemblies. www.zierick.com.
The X85 system is a comprehensive product launch from FlexLinkFlexLink Systems, Inc., demonstrated its conveying solutions integrated with different pick-and-place and materials handling units. It also introduced a production tooling and software suite at the show. The X85 conveyor offers improved MTBF and low noise level. Distributed line control allows dynamic speed control with soft starts and stops to protect PCBs from damage, enables line balancing, and is said to reduce energy consumption. The X85 pallet system is a toolbox for single-piece flow solutions enabling flexible routing and product control. Different configurations suit application needs; the pallets are prepared for communication with machines, line control, and MES solutions. Youtilize MES manages all resources available in production: operators, machines, and parts used; as well as all data and information. It communicates in real time. www.flexlink.com.
IDENTCO International introduced a line of thermal transfer printers, called ELP for electronic label printers. Models 220, 320, and 620 host three different dots per inch (dpi) formats. The printers target durablity, small-label printing, and economical cost-of-ownership. The ELP620 printer offers micro-miniature printing capabilities. The printers are all equipped with multiple connection capabilities, including serial, parallel, USB, Ethernet, and wireless. The ELP line also features "stand alone" mode, where the printer can produce one label over and over or a variable label with serialized or sequential information on each label, without a host PC or network connection. www.identico.com.
Unovis Solutions exhibited its capabilities in dispensing, placing odd-form components, test handling, chip stacking and flip chip, and other assembly tasks. The company targets electronics assembly for semiconductor, medical, automotive, and telecom OEMs. www.unovissolutions.com.
KUKA Robotics Corporation presented on emerging trends and advancements in robotics. John Nelson, plastics industry product manager, KUKA, spoke on trends in six-axis robotic applications for injection molders at the KUKA booth. The company also featured and demonstrated multiple KUKA robots milling, welding, and performing applications on plastic substrates. www.kukarobotics.com.
