The Most Important Platform for China's Electronics Manufacturing CommunityBy Simon Lian, editor-in-chief, SMT China
With China becoming the world's most important electronic manufacturing locale, Nepcon Shanghai 2007/EMT China 2007 has become the most important marketing platform for China's electronics manufacturing industry. Covering the full spectrum of electronics manufacturing equipment and technologies, over 35% of the exhibitors showcased their newest products and technologies at this edition. Pavilions from the U.K., Singapore, Korea, Germany, Taiwan, and the U.S. demonstrated the most advanced electronics manufacturing solutions and met with business partners in China.
The four-day event stretched over four floors, occupying 32,000 sq. meters in the Shanghai Everbright Center. Trade professionals had the chance to meet more than 650 exhibitors from 22 countries. More than 18,000 visitors flocked through the doors this year. This year, Sony and Juki joined a "Who's Who" list that includes Agilent, Asymtek, Assembléon, Cookson Electronics, Dage, DEK, Finetech, First Technology, Heller, Henkel Loctite, Indium, Kasion, Kyzen, Leeport, OK International, Orbotech, Siemens, Smartech, SMT Ltd., SolderStar, Speedline, Universal Instruments, Valor, WKK China Ltd., and others. Co-located with Nepcon Shanghai, EMT China is the most comprehensive electronics manufacturing trade event in the region. It featured the fastest growing segments of electronics manufacturing, including test-and-measurement, components manufacturing, and electronics manufacturing services (EMS).
Nepcon/EMT China, which are the only exhibitions supported by China's Ministry of Information Industry (MII), brought even more exciting networking opportunities this year. The plethora of planned events included Surface Mount Technology Association (SMTA) workshops and conferences, Nepcon Nite featuring the SMTA China annual dinner, and a graduation ceremony for the China State Education Program for High-demand IT Talent SMT Technical Training Program, approved by the MII.
Meanwhile, the SMT China VISION Awards ceremony and celebration banquet was held on April 24, 2007. Eighteen awards, including two Chinese Achievement Awards especially for local companies, were presented, honoring the best regional electronic manufacturing solutions. The awards strive to inspire companies to achieve the highest standards and push the industry forward and, because of this, they have gained overwhelming support in the industry.
"Nepcon offers an excellent opportunity for professionals to get together and gather information," said Boa Wei, manager with EMS provider Celestica. "We've met so many players in one location and at one time so that we are able to learn quickly quite a lot about the industry's trends. It also enables us to network with many leading electronics manufacturing equipment suppliers and establish a channel for exchanging information later and possible purchasing of new equipment."
"As it enters its 17th year, Nepcon Shanghai has become a unique platform for both exhibitors and visitors to exchange information face-to-face, see the latest industrial technologies, and establish business networks," said Josephine Lee, vice president, East China, Reed Exhibitions China. "Nepcon is an industry leader, so it's no coincidence that our expectations as exhibitors should be high," applauded Karen Moore-Watts, global market director of DEK. "Nepcon has become one of the largest professional SMT platforms, through which we'll be able to let people know more about us," said Abby Tsoi, CEO of Kasion Automation Ltd and president of SMTA China. "We find that the show is a great place to catch up with existing customers and meet new customers in a no-pressure environment," added Marc Peo, president of Heller Industries. "In this way, the show gives vendors and customers the chance to accelerate the problem-solving process and learn about the new technologies faster and with fewer distractions." Mark Stansfield, general manager of SolderStar noted that "Nepcon Shangai is a successful stage."
In the conference, SMTA seminars featured an array of diverse presentations on packaging, system-in-package (SiP), material and process characterization, and lead-free reliability. Esteemed speakers from both local and international firms provided analysis of key industry issues. Participating companies included Cookson Electronics, Henkel Loctite, Indium Corporation, and OK International.
It is reported that the actual sales volume of the electronics information industry in China increased by 24% in 2006 to $4.75 trillion (RMB). Product exports reached $364 billion (U.S.), 36% higher than last year. The MII development plan for 2007 expects sales volume for the electronics information industry to reach $5.8 trillion (RMB), while product exports should hit $390 billion (RMB). The rapidly developing Chinese electronics information industry will bring more business opportunities to both visitors and exhibitors of Nepcon/EMT China 2008.
