Associations Call for Better Part Numbering

HERNDON, Va. and BANNOCKBURN, Ill. iNEMI and IPC Association Connecting Electronic Industries, are both calling for more precise part numbering, especially with BGAs, as some component manufacturers are varying lead-free alloy compositions. Reducing silver, adding metallic dopants, and other adjustments affect final products, prompting EMS providers and OEMs to adjust manufacturing processes.
iNEMI issued a statement calling for part change notices (PCNs) and changes to manufacturing part numbers (MPNs) when a BGA or other component is modified to include lead-free solder other than SAC 305/405. While these new chemistries may improve mechanical reliability of lead-free assemblies, they affect manufacturing recipes; MSL ratings; and "form, fit, and function" of the final device.
IPC, in its most recent industry roadmap, finds fault with component manufacturers' lax reporting of surface finishes for lead-free manufacturing. Some provide components with a new finish requiring higher soldering temperatures, but do not change part numbers to reflect this adjustment. "The EMS provider has worked hard to deal with the intermix of component types, chip passives, BGAs, etc. They now have to contend with a different melting temperature finish," contends IPC, which is attempting to develop standards that assess component temperature conditions as a method to evaluate the capability of a component to withstand the attachment process. With new lead-free terminations, surface finishes, and soldering materials, predictability, warns IPC, is no longer as obvious as in the past.
Knowing the metallurgy is not sufficient, said Peter Tomaiuolo, corporate technology director of Celestica, adding that tracking this difference on the manufacturing floor is key. Adding new part numbers is the only practical way to ensure RoHS compliance and optimized manufacturing, agreed Courtney Ryan, senior vice president of supply chain at Jabil. "We need part number changes for lead-free components. We change all manufacturers' part numbers to ionternal ones at present, to ensure accuracy," added Jasbir Bath, process engineer for RoHS at Solectron.
