EMS Provider Completes NASA Build
April 20, 2007 |Estimated reading time: Less than a minute
IRVINE, Calif. Irvine Electronics, Inc., an EMS provider specializing in turnkey PCB assembly (PCBA) and box build, completed and shipped the final power transfer unit (PTU) for the space shuttle Endeavor. Irvine received the multi-year contract through Pratt & Whitney/Rocketdyne in 2004, and attained AS9100 certification for aerospace specs in December 2006. The shuttle Endeavor is scheduled for flight in June 2007.
The company worked in partnership with NASA-trained and certified personnel to build six PTUs for use on the space shuttles Endeavor and Discovery. The PTU converts electrical power from solar arrays while the shuttle is docked at the International Space Station (ISS). This extends docking time without depleting on-board electrical supplies, and makes use of ISS-generated solar power. The unit's interface targets minimal power losses in a rugged environment.
