Burton Attains Certifications
January 26, 2007 |Estimated reading time: Less than a minute
DURHAM, N.H. After conducting an operations and process audit, ITM Consulting certified Burton Industries' Ironwood, Mich., facility with ITM Process Certification and Lead-free Capability Certification.
ITM examined materials, equipment, processes, and personnel at the Ironwood contract electronics manufacturing (CEM) facility. Its assembly processes met standards and represent best practices for manufacture and assembly, according to ITM. The consultant company determined that the facility is capable of producing lead-free electronic assemblies in compliance with the requirements of the EU RoHS Directive.
ITM's evaluation method comprises a proprietary preliminary SMT assembly process audit, including lead-free process capability. Materials, equipment, documentation, processes, and methodologies are scrutinized. When recommendations of the initial gap-analysis audit are fulfilled, a second audit is performed and a first lead-free build is observed. Samples of the first build are sent to an independent analysis laboratory.
"Our customer base expects process certification and lead-free ability," said Gary Burnett, general manager of Burton. He noted that ITM staff assisted the facility in bringing areas to compliance through improvements or modifications. Burton provides manufacturing services for medical, industrial and commercial controls, automotive, and military electronics.
