Case Study Probes Thermal Issues

SAN DIEGO Thermal process development company KIC posted a case study on energy consumption to its website, stating that the study revealed significant information about thermal management. The study, "The Effect on Energy Use from an Optimized Reflow Oven Recipe in Lead-free Applications," authored by Polish contributor Piotr Káznica, discusses rises in energy consumption for reflow ovens based on temperature increases needed for lead-free soldering.
The author notes that "care was taken to make sure that no optimized oven recipes used a conveyor speed slower than the slowest cycle time in the production line." He maintains that modern thermal profiling and process optimization software can reduce energy intake. The study details the use of KIC's Auto-focus product in a Flextronics reflow oven. The oven operated in lead-free and traditional soldering applications for a total of four simulated operating conditions thermally-optimized lead-free, non-optimized lead-free, optimized leaded, and non-optimized leaded.
Tests were performed with a Heller 1912 EXL convection oven and multifunctional energy meter. Measurements taken during leaded and lead-free processes concluded that using thermal management tools reduced energy consumption. The reduction equaled 15% less energy in leaded applications and 7.8% less for lead-free.
