3M Broadens Static Control Offerings
July 13, 2006 |Estimated reading time: 1 minute
ST. PAUL, Minn. The Electronic Solutions Division of 3M acquired two companies that engineer and manufacture static-control packaging. SCC Products, sister company of Static Control Components, Inc., and JJ Converting LLC will be integrated into 3M, expand its product range for static shielding and moisture barriers.
JJ Converting produces static-shielding moisture vapor barrier (MVB) films used to manufacture static-control bags. They make a laminate from rolled-goods raw materials. Conversion to lead-free has increased awareness of materials surrounding PCBs and components during shipment and storage. Moisture found inside plastic surface mount devices (SMDs) produces damaging vapor pressure during soldering. Because lead-free soldering occurs at a higher temperature than traditional processes, the risk of failure due to trapped moisture is raised.
Film that provides a moisture barrier reduces the possibility that components will need to be re-baked to remove moisture before soldering, or the risk of blistering and cracking if it goes undetected. 3M noted JJ Converting's responsiveness to the evolving market, as well as its 10 years of industry experience, to the evolving market as a reason for the purchase.
SCC's product line includes flexible static-control packaging and workstation products for use with electronic devices. They use JJ Converting's film to make "a large offering of ESD bags," said 3M's Matt Fagan. The electrostatic business, in operation since 1986, focuses on vertical integration and R&D. 3M plans to develop flooring solutions and diversify their flexible packaging offerings through the acquisition. "No one has lost their job during this acquisition," explained Fagan, stating that the two companies will be fully integrated yet maintain their Sanford, N.C., facilities. SCC anticipates global distribution as part of the 3M Corporation.
3M did not comment on specific product development plans, though representative Sara Cziok noted that "synergies that will benefit the combined business" were apparent.
