EMA Targets RoHS Compliance in Design Process

Adding to its recent RoHS/WEEE compliance technologies, EMA Design Automation integrated Omnify software, a data management system, into its engineering data management (EDM) solution. After having used Omnify's software internally to manage RoHS data for customers, EMA Design Automation realized it could also benefit their customers, giving them the ability to design-in RoHS complexities and issues from the beginning.
"One of the things we've learned from our customers is that they don't always have the flexibility to customize their product lifecycle management (PLM) solution quickly for their data management needs in engineering," said Manny Marcano, president and CEO, EMA Design Automation. "They may have some level of capability, but it doesn't help them in the iterative design phase. OEMs often looks at this problem as a manufacturing problem, we're solving the problem further upstream to mitigate the risk in manufacturing." Because RoHS is becoming complex for many companies, this "compliance by design" capability is a vital step.
The software suite manages several aspects of a company's RoHS compliance data, including configuration, bill of materials (BOM), documentation, product changes, and enhanced reporting requirements for compliance. With regard to configuration management, OEMs must manage electrical, mechanical, and software or hardware data; and be able to access and control revisions to all items throughout the product design process. BOM management has become increasingly important when preparing for RoHS compliance. Omnify's software offers BOM management functions to manage revisions and understand the lifecycle of a BOM. Customers can analyze and develop compliance reports from any level, or any version of the BOM.
Due diligence is a vital step in RoHS compliance, requiring companies to store component datasheets, certificates of compliance, material declaration, testing information, and traceability. This solution lets companies store this information on an individual part number level, and access it for at least four years. Reports and analysis data must also be accessible during the entire development process. If any product data information is changed, all companies involved must be aware of this. EMA's solution lets customers generate reports automatically during design. "In the past, many OEMs left data management up to PLM or product data management (PDM) systems," said Marcano. "That doesn't work now because companies need that data in the design phase."
Further targeting RoHS/WEEE management during product design, EMA Design Automation also recently teamed with Ageus Solutions to provide environmental compliance solutions from design through manufacture. This partnership allows EMA to broaden its EDM solution to record, manage, and report design and development data used to create manufactured products.
