Thin, Flexible Heaters Enable Precise Placement
January 5, 2006 |Estimated reading time: Less than a minute
ST. LOUIS — A series of polyimide and etched-foil silicone rubber flexible heaters and hybrid heaters from Watlow are said to allow heat to be placed precisely where required, while the heater circuit meets customer specifications.
The polyimide heaters are made of a thin, lightweight organic polymer film offering high tensile strength, tear resistance, and dimensional stability. The heater features physical and electrical properties that offer thermal stability over a wide temperature range. The heater is suitable for applications requiring low outgassing in a vacuum or resistance to radiation, fungus, and chemicals. Polyimide is also resistant to solvents.
The heater runs in environments down to -195°C — targeting military and aerospace, medical, laboratory research, photographic equipment, optical equipment, LCD displays, and computer equipment. The high-temperature etched-foil silicone rubber heaters offer zoned heating to ensure uniform part temperatures by matching power density to application requirements. Measuring 0.30" thick, the heater is insulated with a mica sheet. Because of their thin construction, the heaters reach temperature quickly. They are available in circular or 2-D shapes. Watlow offers a range of flexible heater options for applications such as high- and low-temperature, vacuum, and harsh environments.
