New Power Cube Inductors Offer No Thermal Aging

SAN DIEGO — The new PG0322NL series thru-hole, shielded, shaped-core power inductors are ideal for use in voltage regulator modules (VRMs), DC/DC converters, and point-of-load applications in the motherboard and server markets, and are now available from Pulse, a Technitrol Company.
The PG0322NL inductors have a 32- to 60-A high heat current rating and a 30- to 50-A high current saturation capability for high-current, mulitphase buck converter applications. Operating temperature range is -40° to 130°C, providing enough margin for thermal derating, especially for high-ambient-temperature applications. A wide open circuit inductance (OCL) ranges from 0.28 to 1.20 µh, offering a choice in inductance values for the smallest ripple current and fastest system transient response. A low direct current resistance (DCR) ranges from 0.60 to 1.65 mΩ, yielding high system efficiency due to low copper losses. Both the OCL and DCR have tight tolerances of ±15% and ±8%, respectively, allowing for accurate current sensing in systems using the inductor as the current sense element.
Their ferrite core material is said to result in low power use and less heat generation, and also eliminates the risk of thermal aging core failures. Their 9.5-mm package height allows them to fit underneath a processor heatsink, and the 14.5-mm² footprint reportedly minimizes board space. Finally, the inductors also are RoHS-compliant and meet the EIA481 standard.
