PCB BOOK-TO-BILL RATIOAugust Book-to-Bill Ratio Holds Steady
NORTHBROOK, Ill. - The IPC IMS/PCB book-to-bill ratio for August 2005 held at 1.16. IPC reports a book-to-bill of 0.1.01 for rigid PCBs and 1.62 for flexible circuits. For these segments combined, sales billed (shipments) for August 2005 increased 7.2% year-over-year, and orders booked increased 14.6% from August 2004.
August’s overall book-to-bill level held strong this month, while combined orders booked for August 2005 jumped 14.1% over last month.
Motorola Cuts 1,900 Jobs Globally
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - To improve operating efficiency, Motorola Inc. will cut 1,900 jobs at 29 U.S. and international locations. The layoffs, which began in July 2005, will be distributed over Motorola’s facilities in more than 20 countries. The company’s workforce will remain at 68,000, however, as the cell phone maker adds staff in areas such as engineering and marketing. Motorola’s manufacturing plant in South Korea, which is transitioning to a design center, and a distribution and service center in Elgin, Ill., are among the affected sites. The Elgin facility is being sold to Communications Test Design Inc. of West Chester, Pa.
SMTA Successful in Chicago Public Schools
ROSEMONT, Ill. - Members from the Great Lakes Chapter of SMTA and the Chicago Public Schools - Education to Careers (CPS - ETC) Program recently reaffirmed their commitment to the program, which brings hands-on experience of electronics manufacturing into Chicago classrooms. Now in its third year, the program combines academics with career and technical education and hands-on training. Program leaders engaged IPC (Institute of Printed Circuits) and made a financial contribution that enabled ETC electronics instructors to become IPC-certified in August 2005.
PennWell Acquires Small Times Magazine
TULSA - PennWell Corporation has acquired Small Times Magazine, covering nanotechnology, MEMs and microsystems. The acquisition also includes Small Times’ associated trade conference and exhibition, NanoCommerce; Website (www.smalltimes.com); newsletters; and research services.
Founded in 2001, Small Times is published nine times a year and has a circulation of 28,000. The magazine is the leading source of news and analysis for micro and nanotechnology - highlighting industry advancements, applications and investment opportunities to help business leaders stay abreast of the evolving nanotechnology market.
PFSA Moves to Dedicated Facility
BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. - Panasonic Factory Solutions Company of America (PFSA) has moved from Elgin, Ill., to a dedicated facility in Buffalo Grove, Ill. The new facility will house Panasonic’s industrial market units: Welding and Robotics, Electronics Assembly (EAG) and Microelectronics (MEG). “This move is most advantageous…. We have expanded our MEG cleanroom by 60%, and added lab space specifically for metrology and solutions,” said Tom Gebhardt, president, PFSA.
