Universal Instruments Restructures in Binghamton and Bangalore
October 11, 2005 |Estimated reading time: Less than a minute
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. Universal Instruments Corp. announced infrastructure and staffing changes aimed at increasing product quality, sales growth and customer satisfaction in its Binghamton and Bangalore, India facilities.
Several key software engineers and software test jobs will move from Bangalore to Binghamton. About 26 positions will be removed from the India location, while about 18 will be created in New York. "The Bangalore teams have made contributions to our software portfolio over the past two years and this restructuring will shorten the communication cycle, improve operational efficiencies and accelerate the pace of our software development," said Jeroen Schmits, president of Universal Instruments.
Due in part to the restructuring and lower-than-expected business volumes, about 30 manufacturing operations, management and indirect positions at the Binghamton facility will experience a layoff. The company plans to notify those employees later this week. However, Universal is hiring additional sales and service staff worldwide and adding new engineering positions in Binghamton.
