IPC, CCA to Sponsor Lead-free 'Boot Camp'
August 17, 2005 |Estimated reading time: 1 minute
BANNOCKBURN, Ill. — On July 1, 2006, the RoHS Directive will go into effect, banning several substances including lead and lead-bearing solder. California's mirroring laws take effect in early 2007, and China passed similar legislation last month. Lead-free is significantly impacting the supply chain — keeping track of the evolving regulations, customer requirements and compliance documentation is a lot of work for any company. To address these issues regarding lead-free, IPC – Association Connecting Electronics Industries, in conjunction with the California Circuits Association (CCA), are sponsoring "Boot Camp: Lead-free Requirements for U.S. Electronic Equipment" on September 27, 2005, in Irvine, Calif., and on September 28, 2005, in San Jose, Calif. The "boot camp" will introduce attendees to the global push for lead-free electronics, also addressing which products are slated to be exempt from legislation, the projected costs of lead-free implementation and the effects on the supply chain. Attendees will hear about available resources and materials declarations for electronic products to help companies striving to meet lead-free requirements. Instructors include David Bergman, IPC's vice president of standards, technology and international relations; Tony Hilvers, IPC's vice president of industry programs and Fern Abrams, IPC's director of environmental policy.
