iNEMI Innovation Leadership Forum Tackles Industry's Future
August 5, 2005 |Estimated reading time: 2 minutes
HERNDON, Va. — The International Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (iNEMI) will assemble the iNEMI Innovative Leadership Forum at its Herndon, Va., headquarters, September 15-16, 2005, to launch an initiative aimed at stimulating innovation and manufacturing research for the electronics industry. The objective of iNEMI's forum is to create an R&D vision to focus limited resources in this area, ensuring development of the technologies needed to continue growth in the electronics industry over the next decade. A wide range of electronics and emerging industries are expected to participate in the form. National Semiconductor's chairman and CEO, Brian Hall, will open the event with a discussion of innovation vision and challenges facing the U.S. high-tech industry. Other speakers include Dave Wohleen, vice chairman, Delphi Electronics; Curtis Tearte, general manager of IBM's Systems and Technology Group; Justin Ratter, Intel senior fellow and director of Intel's Corporate Technology Group; Iwona Turlick, corporate vice president, Motorola; Brian Swiggett, principal, Prismark Partners; Vasudevan Moorthy, vice president for VLSI & systems design at Wipro; Mary Good, CEO of ASTRA and former Under Secretary of Commerce; Linda Katehi, dean of engineering at Purdue University; Mike Rocco, chair of the National Nanotechnology Initiative, NSF; Uma Chowdhry, vice president, central research and development, DuPont; and Keith Blakely, CEO, NanoDynamics. The forum targets business leaders, innovators and research decision makers, such as technology executives from OEMs, as well as university-based researchers. "The rapid globalization of high-tech innovation and manufacturing has caused several notable industry leaders to express serious concerns about the future competitiveness of our industrial infrastructure," says Bob Pfahl, vice president of iNEMI. "It's widely accepted that sustained growth of our industry requires development of disruptive technologies, innovative products and advanced manufacturing processes. However, industrial research has been consistently downsized over the past decade," Pfahl continues. The 2004 iNEMI Roadmap noted several technology and business challenges the industry is up against in the next ten years. If these are not addressed, the continued viability of the industry may weaken, added Pfahl. Leaders from industry, government and academia are encouraged to use the forum to discuss innovation challenges, technology roadmaps for emerging sectors, product development and manufacturing strategies, educational issues, R&D priorities, recommendations and potential funding sources. Attendance is by invitation and will be restricted to 150 participants. Registration to the forum is free to iNEMI members and $295 for non-members. Please click here for more information. Those interested in attending should contact Bob Pfahl at (703) 834-2083, or via e-mail: bob.pfahl@inemi.org.
