ESI, Universal Collaborate on Placement Systems
April 18, 2005 |Estimated reading time: 1 minute
BINGHAMTON, N.Y., and PORTLAND, Ore. — Electro Scientific Industries (ESI), Inc.'s optical and sensor solutions reportedly facilitate Universal Instruments' Lightning placement head's functionality, so ESI and Universal have released into production a complete imaging station that includes a Lightning, optics and sensor solution to work with ESI's CorrectPlace software architecture for SMT applications.
The Lightning head employs complex algorithms found in ESI's CorrectPlace software, reportedly ensuring accuracy and consistency and speeding time-to-find and time-to-align functions. Mounted on Universal's AdVantis platform's beam, Lightning provides throughputs up to 30,000 cph. On the twin-beam GSM Genesis platform, two Lightning heads can be deployed for placement speeds to 57,000 cph.
"ESI has remained a valued partner for 10 years," notes Andy Coots, Universal's director of engineering. "Their combined optical and sensor solution provides an advantage that allows the GSM Genesis Lightning, a dual-beam, dual-head system, to compete with four-beam, four-head machines. ESI's machine-vision technology helps Universal customers attain the added advantages of the lowest possible maintenance and high intrinsic availability for our platform product line. We look forward to continued collaborations with ESI to supply innovative vision systems for our future product lines."
"ESI places great value on its long-term partnership with Universal," according to Sean Phillips, ESI's director of vision products. "With decades of experience and leadership in developing solutions for our global customers, we believe ESI provides the fastest application-specific alignment capability in the world. ESI is driven to continue its legacy and provide our long-term and new OEM worldwide customers with competitive advantages from the industry's most robust vision systems."
