Siemens and RIT Partner to Offer New Lean Manufacturing Training

Norcross, Ga. — The Electronics Assembly Systems Division of Siemens Logistics and Assembly Systems (EA) is providing a Lean Manufacturing Course for the Americas. The first two-day course is scheduled for January 26 and 27, 2005, in partnership with the Center for Electronics Manufacturing & Assembly (CEMA) at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), Rochester, N.Y. This course is being offered as a direct result of the Siemens EA Consortium for the Advancement of Electronics Manufacturing Education (CAEME).
The training will take place at RIT's Center for Electronics Manufacturing & Assembly facility. This facility has a fully equipped SMT Laboratory that includes screen printing, dispensing, pick-and-place, reflow, rework stations, optoelectronics workstations, wire bonding, test, and inspection equipment.
Participants will be exposed to a broad list of Lean tools and definitions. They will also compare some attributes of traditional/batch manufacturing to Lean manufacturing. Participants will perform a simulation exercise pertaining to electronics assembly to demonstrate how the Lean tools and concepts can impact their operations. On an overview basis, the following Lean tools will be defined and discussed: Value Stream Mapping (VSM); 5-S; Visual Controls; Standard Work; Takt; Kanban, Pull Systems and Supermarkets; Line and Cell Design; Setup Reduction, Total Productive Maintenance (TPM); Kaizen Event Training; Impact and Culture Change; and Assessment Tools.
