Kester, Metcal, BTU International and STI Will Present Upcoming Lead-free Assembly Seminar
October 12, 2004 |Estimated reading time: 2 minutes
Des Plaines, Ill.—Kester, Metcal, BTU International and Soldering Technology Inc. (STI) will present a series of Lead-free Technology Seminars scheduled to take place throughout 2004. The next seminar will take place Tuesday, November 9 through Wednesday, November 10, 2004, in Atlanta, Ga.
Lead-free assembly is a reality today, and many European and Asian electronics companies already are there. Kester, Metcal, BTU International and STI understand the challenges associated with converting existing processes to lead-free, and have the experience and knowledge obtained through years of research and involvement in global consortia and customers.
The seminar is designed to assist electronics assembly manufacturers with the reliable and cost-effective implementation of lead-free assembly operations. It covers the main issues of lead-free soldering in SMT, wave soldering, BGA profiling, rework operations and more. The seminar offers attendees both technical and practical information on how to prevent process issues typically associated with lead-free soldering. Successful case studies also are discussed, illustrating solutions to issues generally encountered with lead-free assembly.
As an additional benefit, the seminar details the steps to lead-free assembly in the implementation of a lead-free SMT and wave process, and will help attendees in developing a solid understanding of the process variables. Monitoring of the variables will maintain excellent production yields and product reliability within lead-free operations.
Featuring 12 hours of technical presentation, the seminar is designed for process engineers who are or who will be implementing lead-free assembly and its rework operations. It will be beneficial to line supervisors, group leaders and line operators needing to offer immediate and effective process solutions. It also will benefit research and development, repair and maintenance, quality assurance and those thinking of implementing or those who already are using lead-free solders.
The upcoming seminar will take place at the Holiday Inn Select Peachtree Corners, 6050 Peachtree Industrial Blvd., Norcross, GA 30072; (770) 448-4400, and will explain how to implement lead-free reliably. Additional topics will include alloy selection, flux selection, wave process, SMT assembly, inspection and documentation, rework and hand soldering, reflow optimization, lead-free reliability and issues and answers. Additionally, attendees are encouraged to bring their boards for rework solutions.
The seminar will feature guest speakers who will address specific issues, such as lead-free thermal profiling, lead-free inspection and rework. It also will feature a list of distinguished presenters, including the following:
*Peter Biocca, senior market development engineer, Kester
*Paul Wood, market development manager, Metcal
*Fred Dimock, senior process engineer, BTU International
*Jason Gjesvold, analytical lab manager, STI
The course will provide every attendee with a complete Lead-free Assembly Technical Manual, containing detailed technical presentations, white papers and a free one-year subscription to the Lead-free Connections Newsletter, mailed quarterly.
