Speaking of this Week summarizes and analyzes events in the electronics assembly industry every Friday.
Progress dominates the news this week, with news of upcoming trade shows (including more about SMTA International/ATE) following close behind. There's also more teamwork, a bit of financial news and a personnel announcement.
- In progress news, Elgin, Ill.-based Panasonic Factory Automation's Software Development Group was awarded with a CMMI Level 3 rating by Carnegie Mellon's Software Engineering Institute. Carlsbad, Calif.-based Asymtek added four new distributors to its network in China, and Billerica, Mass.-based Transition Automation established an open industry forum on printing technology. In a similar vein, the Princeton Junction, N.J.-based Independent Distributors of Electronics Association (IDEA) established a Non-conforming Parts Board on its Web site to identify non-conforming parts circulating in the marketplace. UK-based Soldertec Global developed a series of lead-free CD-ROMs, and announced it was available to help educate the industry about the UK ban on some brominated flame retardants. Cambridge, Ontario, Canada-based ATS Automation Tooling Systems Inc. received a follow-on order for flat-panel display manufacturing, bringing the total in orders under this particular customer program to US $28 million. In more good news, Sun Valley, Calif.-based Creative Automation Co. announced that its true volume positive displacement pump was voted one of the Top 100 products by readers of Medical Products Manufacturing News (MPMN) Magazine. Finally, IPC — Association Connecting Electronics Industries is shut down today for the move from Northbrook to Bannockburn, Ill., and will reopen on Monday.
- Lots of events on the horizon: College Park, Md.-based Raymond Communications is organizing another Take it Back! Teleconference, this one on RoHS data collection, at the end of the month. San Clemente, Calif.-based YESTech and Des Plaines, Ill.-based Kester will both be exhibiting at Assembly Technology Expo at the end of the month. Utica, N.Y.-based Indium Corp. of America's VP of technology, Ning-Cheng Lee, Ph.D., will present lead-free workshops in the Czech Republic and Hungary in mid-October. The organizers of NEPCON Texas announced that the show will feature the co-located Assembly Texas Pavilion and SMTA Texas Conference, as well as six free educational sessions. Finally, IPC and FED will present an embedded passives component conference in early November in Munich, Germany.
- In companies coming together, Temple, Texas-based SMT Resource Group LLC is teaming up with Dallas-based Encore Capital Leasing to launch a leasing program for used equipment. And Tampa, Fla.-based Reptron Electronics Inc. saw its Hibbing, Minn. facility be awarded a production contract from Hunt Technologies Inc., while Portland, Ore.-based Northwest Analytical Inc. signed a partnership agreement with Beijing-based CA-China Soft Software Technology Co. Ltd. for NWA to be the exclusive supplier of SPC software to the Chinese company.
- In financial news, Flamatt, Switzerland-based COMET Holding AG sold 100,000 new shares to help investments in X-ray technology, such as its acquisition of FEINFOCUS.
- Finally, S-Bond Technologies LLC announced that industry expert Paul Vianco, Ph.D. joined its Advisory Board.
