Speaking of this Week summarizes and analyzes events in the electronics assembly industry every Friday.
In this short week, the news is all over the place. Progress dominates, with awards being handed out willy-nilly and orders on the rise. Coming industry events stretch into the fall, while personnel and partnership news is on the radar screen as well. Finally, one tooling system company reported markedly improved results for the second quarter. Let's get to it:
- In award news, Providence, R.I.-based Cookson Electronics recognized 11 of its employees with its Presidents Award, which rewards those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty, with a direct effect on the business. Myrtle Beach, S.C.-based AVX Corp. received the Corporate Environmental Achievement Award (CEAA) from the American Ceramic Society for its work in ensuring environmental awareness within its manufacturing process. Northbrook, Ill.-based IPC — Association Connecting Electronics Industries presented three high school students with $500 scholarships from its Electronics Assembly Scholarship Fund. UK-based Soldertec Global is requesting applications and nominations for its sixth annual Lead-free Solder Awards, with a deadline of October 15. Past winners have included such industry heavyweights as Dongkai Shangguan, Ph.D., of Flextronics and Ning-Cheng Lee, Ph.D. of Indium Corp. Matthews, N.C.-based InteliCoat Technologies announced it is now certified to ISO 9001:2000. Finally, Breda, Holland-based Cobar Solder Products, the North American offspring of Cobar Europe BV that opened in March, has seen increased orders for VOC-free soldering fluxes and various solder pastes, filling its warehouse there to the brim. And Fremont, Calif.-based Intellect Lab launched a 5 percent rebate in the form of Schmartboard prototyping boards.
- In event news, Indium Corp. scheduled its next QuickStart seminar in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. at the end of this month. Lake Mary, Fla.-based FARO Technologies Inc. is going out on a Gage "concert tour" all over the country, and the Minneapolis-based SMTA is offering a plethora of free events at SMTA International, including a panel discussion on Jisso by our own Gail Flower. The conference takes place in late September, in conjunction with Assembly Technology Expo, in Rosemont, Ill. Finally, to get those in Europe ready for lead-free, Oosterhout, The Netherlands-based Vitronics Soltec will launch its third annual European Seminar Tour on the subject. The seminars will take place in September, October and November in 19 countries.
- In personnel news, Stamford, Conn.-based FEINFOCUS has added Guido Rademaker, Ph.D. and Thomas Pukall to its application engineering staff, while Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Honeywell's Electronics Materials business has a new director of operations and Six Sigma in Gary Freburger. Finally, Torrington, Conn.-based DYMAX Corp. appointed Darrell Ripley as managing director of Asian sales and operations.
- In partnership news, Flemington, N.J.-based DEK formed a new distribution agreement with Maxem Engineering Ltd. for its products in Ireland.
- Finally, in the second quarter of 2004, Poway, Calif.-based Production Solutions Inc. saw sales rise more than 78 percent year-over-year, following a 35 percent sales increase in the first quarter over 2003 figures. Lookin' good!
