December 31, 1969 |Estimated reading time: 3 minutes
By Christine F. Della Monaca, Managing Editor, SMT
Speaking of this Week summarizes and analyzes events in the electronics assembly industry every Friday.
The tradeshow season is in full swing, and there's plenty of news about it this week. There's also lots of heartening progress news, as well as that of personnel and partnerships, a bit of financial news, and a look at the components portion of the industry. Let's get to it:
- In event news past, present and future, several major companies in various areas of the electronics assembly industry have launched educational lead-free events, including FEINFOCUS, Engent, KIC, Henkel Technologies, Speedline, VJ Technologies, Raymond Communications, and, next week in Nuremberg, Germany, Indium Corp., with KIC as a co-presenter. Tackling other industry hot topics, the Minneapolis-based SMTA announced its Opening Session and Annual Meeting for SMTA International, taking place in late September in Chicago. Topics to be addressed include (you guessed it) lead-free and outsourcing to China. During the SMTA International Emerging Technologies Summit, MEMS, 3-D packaging, and new materials and processes will be thoroughly discussed. Finally, Washington, D.C.-based IMAPS announced this week that Alec. J. Barbiaz, senior vice president and a founder of Carlsbad, Calif.-based Asymtek, will keynote IMAPS 2004, taking place in mid-November in Long Beach, Calif.
- In progress news, San Francisco-based Eoplex Technologies closed a round of Series B funding, which will be used in part to build an automated prototype facility. Eoplex has partnered with Pro-mation to build and integrate the new prototype line. Across the pond, Edinburgh, Scotland-based Optocap Ltd. opened an optoelectronics packaging center, with Scottish First Minister Jack McConnell presiding over the opening ceremony. Allentown, Pa.-based FlexLink Systems Inc. participated in the Forum for Innovation in San Juan, Puerto Rico, sponsored by INDUNIV. Garden Grove, Calif.-based DPAC Technologies was presented with the "Best in Show" product award for its Airborne wireless LAN node module at Sensors Expo in Detroit this week. Finally, in Internet news, St. Louis-based Watlow made major modifications in design and content to its Web site, and Billerica, Mass.-based Transition Automation introduced an electronic newsletter.
- Lots of personnel news: Phoenix-based Anvet Electronics Marketing has a new president of its Americas division in Phil Gallagher, while Franklin, Mass.-based JNJ Industries appointed Valrico, Fla.-based DACO Technologies Inc., including company head Don Adkins, as its manufacturer's representative in Florida. Utica, N.Y.-based The Indium Corp. of America promoted three of its engineers, namely Paul Socha to principal engineer, Specialty Metals Division, and Dave Sbiroli and Tim Jenson to senior technical support engineers, Interconnect Materials. Finally, Niles, Ill.-based Ircon Inc. has added sales personnel in southern China and Canada, key markets for the company.
- In partnership news, Key Largo, Fla.-based APE signed a distribution agreement with Milan-based IEMME SpA to distribute APE equipment in Italy, and Salt Lake City-based Harman Music Group chose the XStation transmission X-ray inspection system from Boston-based Teradyne's Assembly Test Division as its standard test platform. Finally, Wilsonville, Ore.-based Mentor Graphics Corp. entered into an agreement to buy San Jose, Calif.-based 0-In Design Automation Inc.
- In (good) financial news, Montreal-based Coreco Inc. reported that its first quarter revenues of US $5.3 million were up 22 percent over the same period last year, and 7 percent quarter-over-quarter.
- To end this week's column on some good news, the Arlington, Va.-based Electronic Components, Assemblies & Materials Association (ECA) stated that the monthly order index continued to climb for the 10th straight month.
This just in: According to this week's Quick Vote, if you think you've got it bad, keep in mind that 62 percent of respondents haven't had a raise in more than two years. Thirty-one percent did get a raise within the last year, while 21 percent got one in the last six months, and 14 percent saw an increase in their pay within the last two years.
