Key Industry Companies Launch Lead-free Events
June 7, 2004 |Estimated reading time: 1 minute
Several companies in various areas of the electronics assembly industry have launched lead-free educational events to discuss the different aspects of assembly that the technology touches.
For example, Stamford, Conn.-based FEINFOCUS is running a worldwide technical seminar program on X-ray inspection technology. Seminars will be tailored to the audience and focus on specific applications, from X-ray inspection fundamentals to traditional non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques to lead-free analysis and 3-D inspection of electronic assemblies and packaging. Udo E. Frank, Ph.D., director of technology development at FEINFOCUS is organizing the seminars. The company has cooperated with its regional representatives in developing the seminar schedule worldwide, with courses planned for the Americas, Asia and Europe. The first seminar was held in late April in Korea, hosted by FEINFOCUS representative Elecsys.
In a similar vein, a hands-on lead-free workshop was held at Engent's manufacturing facility the last week in May, sponsored by Engent, KIC, Henkel Technologies, Speedline and VJ Technologies. This approach to Pb-free education combined traditional classroom instruction with hands-on application, allowing attendees to test their knowledge on the production floor by building and reworking a lead-free assembly using the latest profiling tools, advanced lead-free materials, equipment and next-generation analytical tools. The companies are planning another course in the fall, with more details to be announced.
Taking a slightly different tack, Raymond Communications, publishers of Recycling Laws International will hold its first "Take It Back!" teleconference in mid-July, addressing critical compliance issues of the RoHS Directive. The teleconference will give attendees a first look at new guidance being drafted by the UK Department of Trade and Industry in an effort to clarify how companies should go about complying with Europe's complex new electronics recycling laws.
