SMTA Announces SMTA International Opening Session and Annual Meeting

Minneapolis — The Opening Session and Annual Meeting during SMTA International, which is taking place September 26 through 30 at the Donald Stephens Convention Center in Chicago, Ill., will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 28 and 29, respectively.
The Opening Session (8:30 to 10 a.m.), free to all attendees, will focus on RoHS compliance and also solder trends and lead-free soldering issues. In addition to examining lead, other banned substances include mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biophenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE). Presentations will be given by Harvey Stone of The Good-bye Chain Group and Paul Vianco, Ph.D., Sandia National Labs.
Also during the SMTA International Opening Session, the 2003 Conference Award Winners will be recognized, including Best of Conference Presentation (a tie), Andrew Mawer, Freescale Semiconductor and Paul Wang, Sun Microsystems; Best Proceedings Paper, Dave Nelson and Hector Pallavicini, Raytheon Co.; and Best International Paper, Dwayne Shirley, University of Toronto.
The Annual Meeting (noon to 1:30 p.m.) will feature Pam Gordon, president and founder of Technology Forecasters, presenting "China or North America? Choosing the Right Region for the Right Task," which will provide insights on strategic selection of regions including China, other Asian countries, Mexico and elsewhere in North America to achieve superior competitiveness and higher confidence among customer, supplier and public constituents.
Gordon leads Technology Forecasters Inc., a strategic consulting firm serving some of the world's most well known electronics companies in best-practice outsourcing, supply chain and profitable environmental steps. Before founding Technology Forecasters Inc. in 1987, Gordon was a senior analyst at Gnostic Concepts Inc., an electronics industry market research firm. Gordon is a certified management consultant by the Institute of Management Consultants, and a prolific author, having written nearly 200 articles for trade and business journals. In 2001 she wrote the book Lean and Green: Profit for Your Workplace and the Environment, and she also is a frequently invited speaker regarding outsourcing and profitable, environmental business practices.
Also during the Annual Meeting, the SMTA will present its Association Awards and the Charles Hutchins Educational Grant. The SMTA Awards are given out annually to members who have given their time, energy and expertise to ensure the success of both the SMTA and the industry. The Hutchins Grant, in memory of industry colleague Charles Hutchins, is a $5,000 award given annually to a graduate-level student pursuing a degree and working on thesis research in electronics packaging or related field.
