Speaking of this Week — May 28, 2004
December 31, 1969 |Estimated reading time: 3 minutes
By Christine F. Della Monaca, Managing Editor, SMT
Speaking of this Week summarizes and analyzes events in the electronics assembly industry every Friday.
With the long holiday weekend (and the beginning of summer!) staring us in the face, progress dominates this week's electronics assembly news. There's also high-profile people news, as well as partnerships and acquisitions; trade show, financial and legislative news; and a look at the metals industry. Let's get going:
- Progress news in Asia: Eindhoven, The Netherlands-based Assembléon has expanded its sales and service operation there, while Shenzhen Huamei Electroplating Technology Ltd., a brand of Enthone Inc. was voted "Best Brand" in a survey conducted in Beijing, China. Randolph, N.J.-based Glenbrook Technologies shipped its 1,000th real-time X-ray inspection system, and Midland, Mich.-based Dow Corning Corp. established a new global research center to develop and design new materials. Finally, Willow Grove, Pa.-based Tyco Electronics will be offering its Q-Series and APS-1H customers the ability to upgrade to Windows XP as of next Tuesday, and Myrtle Beach, S.C.-based AVX Corp. received the Largest Sales Volume of Passive Products award from Melville, N.Y.-based Arrow Electronics.
- In one of the most newsworthy bits of people news this week, Providence, R.I.-based Cookson Electronics announced that chief executive Ray Sharpe will leave the company for a position in the private sector. Sharpe has been in this business for a long time, and will be missed. In the meantime, Norcross, Ga.-based Siemens Dematic Electronic Assembly Systems Inc. appointed Gregg Schoenrade as senior sales engineer; Cambridge, Ontario, Canada-based ATS Automation Tooling Systems Inc. has a new COO in its executive vice president and CFO, Ron Jutras; and Palatine, Ill.-based Schneider Electric North American Operating Division appointed Mary Frances Cox as vice president of operations.
- Franklin, Mass.-based Speedline Technologies Inc. and Horsham, Pa.-based Aegis Industrial Software Corp. are combining products — namely, Aegis' iMonitor remote monitoring software with Speedline's Camalot dispensing, MPM printing and Electrovert reflow oven equipment. In acquisition news, Rocky Hill, Conn.-based Axsys Technologies Inc. acquired North Billerica, Mass.-based Telic Optics, while Milpitas, Calif.-based Solectron Corp. completed its previously announced divestiture of its Kavlico sensor products to Schneider Electric, and Spring House, Pa.-based Synapsis Technology Inc. signed a reseller agreement with UGS PLM Solutions.
- Trade shows are popping up like weeds in my garden. For example, Herndon, Va.-based NEMI's Tin Whisker Group has released a draft proposal of tin whisker acceptance test requirements, to be presented at a meeting next Wednesday at ECTC in Las Vegas. Looking ahead to the fall, John Ratzenberger (best known as "Cliffie" on Cheers) will keynote Assembly Technology Expo in Chicago, touching on his Travel Channel television show John Ratzenberger's Made in America.
- ATS Automation Tooling Systems Inc. saw sharp increases in revenue, operating earnings, automation systems order bookings and order backlog for its fiscal fourth quarter, which ended March 31. In the meantime, Solectron repurchased $950 million of its zero-coupon senior convertible notes, due November 2020.
- In legislative news, Northbrook, Ill.-based IPC — Association Connecting Electronics Industries announced the results of its recent Capitol Hill Day, which consisted of more than 50 appointments with lawmakers, senators and staff. The meetings had a heavy focus on international trade with the U.S.
- Finally, the UK-based World Bureau of Metal Statistics released its 2004 Yearbook, containing a review of metal production on a global scale for the last decade. Key findings include a major increase in the production of tin for 2003, as well as minor increases in lead and zinc.
This just in: According to this week's Quick Vote, 85 percent of you will not attend ECTC next week, 10 percent of you will, and 5 percent are not sure yet.
