Johnson Controls Automotive Group Strengthens World Electronics R&D Center in Pontoise, France
March 22, 2004 |Estimated reading time: 1 minute
Chicago — Last year Johnson Controls expanded its electronics engineering capabilities with the hiring of more than 100 new engineers at the facility in Pontoise, France, bringing the total work force to approximately 800 employees.
This R&D center, located approximately 20 miles north of Paris, has become the Johnson Controls center of expertise for automotive electronics. Johnson Controls has a large presence in France dating back to the early 1990s. Thanks to new business with the French car manufacturer Renault, Johnson Controls also set up several plants for just-in-time seat production. With the acquisition of Sagem Automotive, 2001 marked the entrance of the company in the automotive electronics market in France. Today, Johnson Controls operates nine manufacturing plants there to serve the European automotive industry, including the recently expanded Sainte Florine plant in the Auvergne region.
Johnson Controls has invested $5 million and created 100 jobs at the Sainte Florine plant. The operation specializes in software and systems engineering that can define a vehicle's electrical/electronics systems architecture. The Sagem acquisition also provided Johnson Controls with additional expertise in instrument clusters, information displays, and multimedia and telematics systems.
The Controls Group of Johnson Controls, a global leader in managing building environments, also has a presence in France. This business unit helps lower the costs of building ownership and operations and makes customers' facilities more productive strategic assets. Specifically, in France, the company employs 2,000 people throughout the country via a network of regional offices to enable a quick and effective service response to customer needs.
Johnson Controls' recent expansion in France won the 2004 Invest in France Automotive Award. The company was recognized during the agency's Awards Ceremony that took place in Detroit on March 9 during the SAE trade show. Keith Wandell, president of the Automotive Group, accepted the award on behalf of the company.
