APEX, IPC Printed Circuits Expo and the IPC Designers Summit will come together for the first time at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif. to offer the "Perfect Blend" for the electronics industry. Attendees will be able to meet with everyone who designs, manufactures, assembles and tests printed circuit boards (PCB) and electronics assemblies. Additionally, they will get input from every level of the supply chain. Conferences and meetings will take place February 21 to 26, 2004, and exhibit hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on February 24 and 25, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on February 26, 2004.
Special Events
Day 1 Keynote and Opening Session, Tuesday, February 24, 8 to 9:15 a.m. Mike Cannon, president and CEO of Solectron and a member of its Board of Directors has extensive manufacturing and technology experience. Prior to joining Solectron, he was president, CEO and a director of Maxtor Corp., a leading global provider of hard disk drives and storage systems. Previously, Cannon was with IBM's Personal Storage Systems Division, where he held several senior leadership positions, including vice president of the Systems Storage business, vice president of product design and vice president of worldwide operations.
Day 2 Keynote, Wednesday, February 25, 9 to 10 a.m. Walter D. Custer, Custer Consulting Group, is known throughout the industry for his entertaining, insightful presentations on the economy and the industry. Winner of the IPC Raymond E. Pritchard Hall of Fame Award in 2001, Custer has been invited to speak at every major PCB exhibition around the globe.
Custer is a member of the IPC PCB Suppliers Council and the Technology Market Research Council (TMRC) Steering Committee. He served as chairman of the Suppliers Council Tradeshow Subcommittee for IPC Printed Circuits Expo. He currently chairs the data collection committee of the TMRC and participates in the World Market Statistical Program.
Day 3 Keynote, Thursday, February 26, 2:30 to 4 p.m. Bill Nye, The Science Guy, wears many hats as scientist, comedian, teacher and author. His mission is to turn kids on to the cool wonders of science. Bill's fascination with how things work led him to Cornell University and a degree in mechanical engineering. After graduation, he worked as an engineer for Boeing. It was in Seattle that Bill combined his love of science with his flair for comedy and became an engineer by day and a stand-up comic by night. Eventually, he segued into a combination of both science and comedy as Bill Nye the Science Guy.
Bill will explain — in his unique, funny way — the value of science and how people in the science field should be celebrated. Bill also will be available for autographs. A ticket is required for this event, and can be obtained from an exhibitor Thursday morning.
The Perfect Connection ... Across the Board Panel, Tuesday, February 24, 9:15 to 10:45 a.m. Analyze the product realization process. Alan Rae, vice president — Technology, Cookson Electronics is the session moderator.
Gala Reception, Wednesday, February 25, 6 to 9 p.m. A ticket is required for this exclusive event ($70). Bars will be open throughout the evening and hosted from 6 to 8 p.m.One free ticket is included in registration packages A-E and with the three-day technical conference. Tickets also are available for individual purchase.
Free Show Floor Reception, Tuesday, February 24, 5 to 6 p.m. Free snacks plus the most important suppliers to the PCB and electronics manufacturing industries. Join in this networking and social event.
Free IPC First Timers Meeting, Tuesday, February 24, 7 to 8 a.m. IPC will acquaint you with all the activities taking place during the show. Continental breakfast is included.
The Perfect Competition This fun activity includes a Q&A session that tests industry knowledge. Next, use logic, leadership skills and assembly skills to build a complete circuit on the show floor. You can sign up as a team (four to five people from different industry segments — design, PCB manufacturing, test and assembly) or sign up as an individual and the IPC will assemble a team. Five teams maximum.
There are four rounds to the competition: Tuesday, 12 to 1 p.m.; Tuesday, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.; Wednesday, 12 to 1 p.m.; Wednesday, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. The "circuits" will be tested for functionality on Thursday between 10 and 10:30 a.m. The winning team will split a $1,000 cash prize. Free Poster Sessions, Wednesday, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.; Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Find additional technical content at these show floor poster sessions. Papers have been selected by the technical committee and will be included in the proceedings.
IPC Awards Luncheons, Monday, February 23, Noon to 1:30 p.m.; Tuesday, February 24, Noon to 1:30 p.m.; Wednesday, February 25, Noon to 1:30 p.m. IPC committee members will be recognized at the IPC Awards Luncheons for their contributions to IPC and the industry. A ticket is required to attend.

Circuits Assembly's Service Excellence Awards, Monday, February 23, 4:30 to 6 p.m. The 2004 Service Excellence Awards (SEAs) for EMS providers, assembly equipment and software suppliers are awards for companies that demonstrate outstanding performance in customer satisfaction. Awards are presented to companies receiving the highest cumulative scores, based on overall customer satisfaction ratings, in five areas of service.
SMT VISION Awards, Tuesday, February 24, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. SMT Magazine presents the prestigious VISION Awards to those innovative products and services in the surface mount field. Winners are chosen for inventive products in the following 15 categories: adhesives/coatings/encapsulants, assembly tools, cleaning, components, contract services, dispensing equipment, environment friendly products/services, inspection, pick-and-place, printing, rework and repair, software, soldering equipment, soldering materials, and testing.
Best in Test Awards, Tuesday, February 24, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The Best in Test Awards are presented annually by the editors of Test & Measurement World. These awards honor important, innovative new products in the electronics test and measurement industry. The Test Engineer of the Year Award will be presented for the first time during APEX. The award will honor an outstanding technical leader, as voted by the magazine's readers. The winning engineer will designate an engineering school to receive a $20,000 grant, courtesy of the award sponsor.
Free Forums
Tuesday through Thursday, February 24 to 26, 2004 Sessions will focus on electronics industry issues, as well as specific topics to help the PCB designer, manufacturer or electronics assembler. These sessions are free to all registered attendees.
