Tyco Electronics Automates End-of-Line Procedures at Productronica
October 17, 2003 |Estimated reading time: 2 minutes
Harrisburg, Pa. — Manufacturers tasked with placing or soldering connector-type components should take time to visit the Tyco Electronics stand (Hall B5, Stand 225) during the upcoming Productronica exhibition.
Showcasing the AP3 pick, place and press system, as well as the Opus 3 selective soldering system, Tyco Electronics offers a range of solutions for odd-form placement and soldering, as well as more conventional PCB assembly equipment. The stand will also feature PCB depaneling machines, including the latest SmartRouter SINGULATION system suitable for flexible production and fast product changeovers.
Because one of the last operations in the manufacturing process is the application of odd-form parts and connectors, the incorrect application of press-fit connectors can lead to costly rework. Designed to increase quality and throughput, the AP3 automates the pick, place and press process with the enhanced repeatability offered by a servo-controlled press. With real-time force feedback on every placement, SPC data can be used to provide better traceability and quality management information.
Targeted for high-volume, high-quality-dependent applications such as automotive, the AP3 offers continuous motion inspection, prior to placement, of connector pins so that they are not bent or damaged. To meet demands for application flexibility, the AP3 has the ability to hold up to 10 different tools and also has two feeder banks capable of holding up to 10 feeders of either tube or belt-fed components.
In the selective soldering arena, the Opus 3 is configured for bottom-side soldering of through-hole and odd-form components. Fitted with a selection of miniature Gaussian wave nozzles, users can also apply tilt to the PCB to enhance capillary action and joint formation. CAD data can be imported to simplify X/Y coordinate programming and users can also use camera-assisted set-up and teach functions.
On the subject of PCB depaneling, the SmartRouter SINGULATION system can accommodate a range of PCBs with either a simple PCB clamping jig, or dedicated tooling. The intelligent routing software offers changeover using a patent-pending feature that enables fixtures to carry the optimized route path for its own product stored in a programmable module attached to the fixture itself. The unit also incorporates vacuum dust extraction with selectable configuration for top- and/or bottom-side dust removal.
If unable to attend the Productronica exhibition, the equipment detailed above can be seen at the Tyco Electronics demonstration facility in High Wycombe, UK., or at the Tyco Electronics facility in Willow Grove, Pa.Tyco Electronics is the world's largest passive electronic components manufacturer; a world leader in cutting-edge wireless, active fiber optic and complete power systems technologies; and is also rapidly developing extensive networking and building technology installation services.
