By Christine F. Della Monaca
Speaking of this Week reflects on events in the electronics assembly industry every Friday.
This week, the progress news just kept coming, and it's good to see. With the tradeshow season right around the corner, news of upcoming shows abounded as well. We've also got financial news, partnerships and a personnel announcement. Let's get to it:
- Some expansion news: Binghamton, N.Y.-based Universal Instruments Corp. established Dover Software India (DSI) in Bangalore, India — an important market. Meanwhile, Concord, Calif.-based March Plasma Systems moved to new headquarters around the corner from its old headquarters, and Goleta, Calif.-based Indigo Systems unveiled a new Web site. In feel-good news, Maatricht, The Netherlands-based Nordson B.V., the company Carlsbad, Calif.-based Asymtek sells its products in Europe through, raised more than $1,000 for the Dutch Heart Foundation through a spinning marathon. On a different subject, across industry, the orders are starting to come in. Case in point: Clearwater, Fla.-based Technology Research Corp. (TRC) has received almost $3 million in orders from Department of Defense contractors, while Schneider Electric signed a new contract with Herzlia, Israel-based Tecnomatix Technologies Ltd. for more than $700,000 to deploy eMPower products in seven sites around the world. Over at Herndon, Va.-based NEMI, there are three new members in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cisco Systems and Harrisburg, Pa.-based Tyco Electronics. Finally, Palo Alto, Calif.-based Agilent Technologies Inc. announced it is the first to offer worldwide, fully conformant ISO 17025 calibration services for complex electronic test instruments.
- A whole bunch of tradeshows are coming up, some sooner than others: Northbrook, Ill.-based IPC — Association Connecting Electronics Industries will hold a second webcast on additional segments of the 2002-2003 IPC National Technology Roadmap on August 21, while the Minneapolis-based SMTA is offering three upcoming tabletop Vendor Shows and two co-located Chapter Training Programs (CTPs) in September and October. Down in Monterrey, Mexico, Alameda, Calif.-based Technology Forecasters Inc. will hold its Quarterly Forum at Elcoteq Network Corp.'s facility there. The topic is comparisons between the manufacturing environment in Mexico, China and Eastern Europe. On September 30, IPC will hold its 2003 Management Council Meetings in Minneapolis, and announced the schedule of events and seminars this week. On the other side of the pond, Productronica will take place in November in Munich, Germany, with numerous U.S. companies among the 1,500 exhibitors. Finally, the SMTA is starting a new workshop, "How to Implement Lead-free Assembly at Your Factory." The first installment will be at Arden Hills, Minn.-based Manufacturer's Services Ltd. in December, and the series will continue into 2004.
- Some financial news: Yavne, Israel-based Orbotech Ltd. announced results for the second quarter and six months ended June 30. Second quarter results reflected a slight uptick in revenues year-over-year: $54.6 million, compared to $54.2 million the year previous. Net income was more substantial, at $1.2 million, compared to a net LOSS of $1.2 million in the prior year-ago period. Natick, Mass.-based Cognex Corp. declared their first quarterly dividend ever of 6 cents per share. Finally, Methuen, Mass.-based Parlex Corp. raised $6 million through the sale of 7 percent convertible subordinated notes and warrants to five institutional investors.
- Just two announcements this week of companies coming together: Portsmouth, R.I.-based International Manufacturing Services Inc. appointed Palatine, Ill.-based M&S Sales Inc. as its sales representative for the U.S. Midwest, while Tokyo-based NEC Corp. and Milpitas, Calif.-based Solectron Corp. formed an agreement in principle for Solectron to provide manufacturing and after-sales service to NEC's advanced Internet-enabled handsets.
- Finally, a personnel announcement: Salt Lake City-based Cimetrix Inc. has added Alan Weber and Scott C. Chandler to its Board of Directors.
This just in: According to this week's Quick Vote, 47 percent of those polled don't have an office in China and don't plan on one, 40 percent of you do have an office there, and 13 percent plan on one in the future.
