SMTA Launches Real World Workshop on Lead-free Implementation
August 7, 2003 |Estimated reading time: Less than a minute
Minneapolis — The SMTA is launching a new workshop, "How To Implement Lead-free Assembly at Your Factory."
Ronald C. Lasky, Ph.D., of Dartmouth College and Indium Corp. of America will lead this course. It will debut on December 9 at Manufacturer's Services Limited in Arden Hills, Minn., and dates for 2004 will be announced shortly afterwards.
With the 2006 deadline for lead-free implementation approaching quickly, this will be a "real-world" course, rather than theoretical, focusing on the "how to" of implementing lead-free at a factory. It covers all of the current issues regarding implementation of lead-free, including current legislation and practices, alloy selection and use, PWB finishes, concerns with regards to components, and best practices in printing, placement, reflow and wave soldering.
During the workshop, a case study will be presented of implementation of a lead-free process performed by Motorola that has been used to assemble more than 1 million mobile phones. The workshop will conclude with a section on establishing a plan for lead-free implementation at individual facilities.
The SMTA membership is a network of professionals who build skills, share practical experience and develop solutions in electronic assembly technologies and related business operations. For more information, visit www.smta.org.
